Former Whitfield County commissioner Doug Keener qualified as a Republican on Monday for the June 19 special election for the Board of Commissioners.

The election will determine who fills the unexpired term of commissioner Pete Pangle in District 4. Pangle passed away in February after a battle with pancreatic cancer. The term expires at the end of 2008.

Keener previously held that seat.

The qualifying fee is $330. Qualifying ends at noon on Wednesday. Qualifying takes place in the vending area of the courthouse.

A Democratic Party representative is expected to be there today, but a Republican representative will only be there from 11 a.m. to noon on Wednesday. Those who wish to qualify as a Republican before then should call (706) 473-4425. Those who wish to qualify as a Democrat may call (706) 275-6212.
