Traffic lights fall on two vehicles

Two vehicles were struck by falling traffic lights at the intersection of Highways 225 and 52 in Chatsworth around 8:30 Monday night, officials said. No one was injured, said Trooper First Class Douglas Cope with the Georgia State Patrol.

The falling lights were caused by a steel bolt that “failed,” said Mohamed Arafa, a spokesman for the Georgia Department of Transportation.

“You can’t predict what really happened,” Arafa said. “But to make a long story short, it failed and it was replaced.”

One light struck the windshield of a Ford Aerostar van driven by Sheila Hall, 33, of Chatsworth, Cope said. Two lights hit the hood, side panel and door of a 2004 Ford Explorer driven by Bonnie Todd, 61, of Chatsworth. Both were traveling west on Highway 52. Phone listings could not be found for Hall or Todd.

The light had just turned green, Cope said.

“The vehicles were not traveling at a high rate of speed which minimized the damage and the injuries,” he said.
