A former Montana resident accused in February 2007 of having hundreds of images of child pornography on his computer here was indicted by a Whitfield County grand jury on three counts of furnishing obscene material to minors.
Phillip Carl Watson, 33, of 1232 Watson Drive, Dalton, is also awaiting trial on a child molestation charge. The trial on that charge is scheduled for May 5.
The three counts of furnishing obscene material to minors are misdemeanors. If convicted, Watson could be sentenced to up to one year in prison and up to a $1,000 fine on each count.
Whitfield County deputies arrested Watson after allegedly finding the images on his computer. Investigators believe he shared the images with a 9-year-old girl he befriended and touched the girl inappropriately.
District Attorney Kermit McManus said additional charges relating to the alleged child pornography have not been filed but could be.
Watson was on parole in Montana for assault on a police officer. McManus said he expects Watson will be transferred to Montana if he is convicted in Whitfield County. He remains in the Whitfield County jail.
• A Dalton teenager accused of setting fire to a pallet of paper towels at the Walnut Avenue Kmart in December was indicted on a charge of second degree arson.
Zachary Dewayne Frady, 18, of 1310 Underwood St., is also accused of illegal burning.
Natasha Lynn Clayton, who was originally charged with arson in connection with the case, was not indicted.
“She is a witness but she is not charged,” said McManus.
A 16-year-old girl who was with Frady and Clayton was cited but her name has not been released because of her age.
Investigators said the motive was “a juvenile prank.”
If convicted, Frady could be sentenced to from one to 10 years in prison.
