Trinity United Methodist Church in Dalton operates a soup kitchen once per month, serving a hot meal to those in need. But there are four members who make sure the help doesn’t end when the kitchen light is turned off.
Nell Rogers, Ethelyn Greeson, Loretta Otts and Frances Pullen purchase ready-to-eat food items and assemble 60 to 100 take-home bags to give to soup kitchen visitors. Rogers, 82, is in charge of buying the goods, which include Vienna sausages, peanut butter crackers and pudding — along with a note of encouragement. The four gather at Rogers’ home to assemble the bags before they are taken to the church to be distributed.
The group’s enthusiasm caught the attention of Rogers’ daughter, Vicki Higgins.
“I am inspired by my mom’s determination to get those bags filled, delivered and given out,” she said. “It doesn’t matter how she’s feeling; she works for several days to get them ready to go.”
For their work in feeding the hungry, The Daily Citizen names Nell Rogers, Ethelyn Greeson, Loretta Otts and Frances Pullen Citizens of the Week.
