GAINESVILLE, Ga. (AP) — Former state Transportation Board chairman Mike Evans has announced he is dropping out of the 9th congressional district race.

Evans issued a statement Wednesday saying he has “struggled to hang on financially” and that continuing to campaign full time will cause “irreparable financial harm” to his family.

He said the past few months have been consumed with outside work trying to provide for his family and pay for two children in college and another headed to college soon.

The former state representative had said he was running to protect homeowners and small businesses from “Obama liberalism.”

Evans stepped down from the transportation board last year after he announced he was dating former Department of Transportation Commissioner Gena Evans. They were married last summer.

U.S. Rep. Nathan Deal vacated the 9th district seat to run for governor.
