Chief deputy: No one harmed in student attack (Updated 1:50 p.m.)

Murray County High School was on lockdown earlier today when a 14-year-old male student threatened a 17-year-old female student with knives in a classroom, said law enforcement officials.

“The student grabbed the girl in a bear hug around her neck and had a serrated kitchen knife in each hand,” said Chief Deputy Ray Sitton. “The teacher was in the room and pulled the boy off her. No one was harmed.”

The student was detained by the teacher and the school resource officer responded, said Sitton.

“The officer searched the student, contained him and has brought him to the sheriff’s office,” Sitton said. “We are now investigating and talking with witnesses.”

Sitton said the school lifted the lockdown after the student was arrested. He said no further information was available at this time.

“MCHS went into Code Yellow lockdown,” said a text alert from the school at 11:14 a.m. “It has now been lifted and all students are safe and secure.”

This is the second lockdown this month for Murray County Schools. Bagley Middle School underwent a lockdown on Sept. 12 when officials said a 16-year-old Mountain Creek Academy student had a shotgun on one of the buses. The student was apprehended without incident or resistance, said Sheriff Howard Ensley.
