Breaking news: Boggs back in St. Louis

Mitchell Boggs of Dalton has been recalled by the St. Louis Cardinals and is scheduled to pitch Friday night against the New York Mets at Shea Stadium in New York.

Boggs, a rookie, won three of his first five major league starts but ran into trouble against the Mets on July 3, allowing 11 runs — 10 earned — and 10 hits and six walks in six innings.

He was sent down to Triple-A Memphis shortly after that game.

Boggs returns to the Cardinals with a 3-1 record and 6.59 ERA, and for the time being, at least, manager Tony La Russa is carrying 13 pitchers — four starters and 13 relievers.

St. Louis made room for Boggs by optioning Jaime Garcia to Memphis.

In tonight’s game, Boggs will oppose the Mets’ Mike Pelfrey (8-6,3.81) in the opener of a three-game series.

The Cardinals play a four-game series in Atlanta starting on Monday.

Boggs, 24, was a standout pitcher at Dalton High School and later at the University of Georgia.
