Area middle school roundup: Dalton’s boys, girls cross country teams finish second

Dalton Middle School’s boys and girls cross country teams both placed second in the Hurricane Alley Invitational on Thursday at Dellinger Park in Cartersville.

Eleven schools took part in the meet, and the Cougars had six top-25 finishers in the 200-runner boys race, with third-place Daniel Castillo leading the way. Other high finishers were Miguel Guzman (eighth), Manuel Prieto (15th), Austin Burt (16th), Luis De La Peña (19th) and Salvador Castillo (22nd).

In the 200-runner girls race, Grace Anderson (third), Monse Hernandez (fifth), Dori Reynolds (13th) and Valerie Rojo (16th) led the way for the Lady Cougars.

Football

Cleveland (Tenn.) eighth grade 36, Dalton 0: Ivan Mora picked off a pass for the Cougars, who opened their season with Thursday’s road loss.

Cleveland (Tenn.) seventh grade 16, Dalton 8: Jahmyr Gibbs had the lone touchdown for the Cougars (1-1) in Thursday’s road loss, while Gabe Hill and Tyson Swope teamed up for the tackle on a safety.

• In North Georgia Middle School Athletic League seventh-grade games on Thursday, Eastbrook (1-0) won 36-0 against Ashworth (1-1), Bagley (2-0) won 36-6 against North Whitfield (0-1) and Valley Point (2-0) won 30-22 against Gladden (0-2).

In NGMSAL eighth-grade games on Thursday, Eastbrook (1-0) won 24-0 against Ashworth (1-1), Bagley (1-1) won 32-22 against North Whitfield (0-1) and New Hope (2-0) won 20-8 against Sonoraville (0-1).

No further statistics on NGMSAL games were reported by The Daily Citizen’s deadline.

Softball

North Whitfield 4, New Hope 3: The Lady Pioneers remained undefeated through four games with Thursday’s road win.

North Whitfield pitcher Maddi Locke allowed two hits and as many walks while striking out three to pick up the win. At the plate, Lily Snyder went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs, while Liv Whaley tripled and drove in two runs.

New Hope did not report statistics by The Daily Citizen’s deadline.
