Prep roundup

Northwest Whitfield High School’s girls basketball team took down the host Lady Broncos 42-36 to move to today’s championship game at the Deep South Classic in Atlanta.

The Lady Bruins trailed throughout the contest down 20-13 at halftime, and down three entering the fourth quarter. But some big shots early in the final period gave the Lady Bruins a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Northwest outscored Brookwood 15-6 in the fourth.

Mary Kate Allen led Northwest (10-3) with 16 points and Holly Heath chipped in 12.

“We played great defensively,” Northwest coach Greg Brown said. “They got a 6-foot-2 post player that’s being recruited by almost everyone in the country. We held her to 13; I was tickled to death with that. She’s a great player and we did a great job on her. I’m proud of how hard we played and how hard we competed.”

Northwest plays Lambert tonight at 6 for the tournament title.

* North Murray 47, Gordon Lee 30: The Lady Mountaineers advanced to the championship of a Christmas tournament at LaFayette High School with a victory on Tuesday. North Murray faces the winner of Benjamin Russell (Ala.) and East Hamilton (Tenn.) tonight at 7.

Kailee Tipton led the Lady Moutaineers (11-3) on Tuesday with 12 points, while Savannah Satterfield had 10. Ten different players scored for North Murray.

“Defensively we came out and executed really well again,” North Murray coach Keith Robinette said. “Kailee and Savannah stepped up and played well today. We didn’t score well and their man-to-man defense was good. We had to earn everything. That’s good for us to get a game like that against a team that is usually in the playoffs.”
