News briefs: Reception to honor school board members Jones, Laird; Lesche club to meet; Dalton-Whitfield Solid Waste Authority meeting rescheduled

Dalton Public Schools and the Dalton Board of Education recognize the service of Sherwood Jones III and Steve Laird at a reception on Monday for their service on the Dalton Board of Education. The reception is at Dalton City Hall, 300 W. Waugh St., at 6 p.m. prior to the December board of education meeting. The public is invited to the reception. Jones and Laird were elected in 2013. Jones has been vice chairman of the board since September 2014.

The Lesche meets on Monday at 7 p.m. at the St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 901 W. Emery St. Church organist Beth Nichols will present a musical program. Founded in Dalton in 1890 by Gertrude Manly Jones, the Lesche is the oldest women’s literary organization in Georgia. The club’s original purpose was to provide learning opportunities for women who were graduates of Dalton Female College. The club name is derived from Greek and means “a meeting of the literary-minded.” Today’s Lesche members study a wide variety of subjects.

The Dalton-Whitfield Solid Waste Authority has rescheduled this month’s meeting from Monday, Dec. 18, to Monday, Dec. 11. The meeting is at noon at Dalton City Hall and is open to the public.
