The Coahulla Creek High School FFA Poultry Team recently competed in the Area FFA Poultry Evaluation Career Development Event. The event was held at Pickens County High School in Jasper on Feb. 26.

The Poultry Evaluation Career Development Event (CDE) develops the abilities of students to evaluate live poultry and poultry products in order to optimize economic returns to producers and industry as well as to meet the needs of consumers. The event motivates students to become knowledgeable consumers of poultry, specifically chicken, and the production goals, as well as products in the industry. Participants identify retail cuts; evaluate live broilers and laying hens; and grade carcasses, processed products and eggs on quality and U.S. Department of Agriculture grade standards. Team members include Caleb Cline, Maddi Locke, Heather Miller and Erica Slaughter.

In this area CDE Coahulla Creek FFA members finished sixth and Locke, a senior FFA member and the chapter president, finished in the Top 10 as an individual.
