Murray County High School Alumni Association seeks members

Though there are literally thousands of alumni of Murray County High School (MCHS), fewer than 200 are members of the school’s alumni association. Officers Tammy Coker Gold (class of 1979), president, and Joan Dooley, membership chair, want to increase that number so the association can do even more for the school, its students and the alumni.

Other officers are Vice President Pete Adams, Secretary Emily Cogburn and Treasurer Tim Howard.

The association, first organized decades ago, has completed more than 25 years of renewed activity. Meetings are held at the Historic Wright Hotel on the corner of Market Street and Second Avenue in Chatsworth on the second Mondays of April and July at 6:30 p.m. The annual meeting is on the Sunday before Thanksgiving in conjunction with the Hall of Fame induction.

The most recent Hall of Fame inductees were Brenda Penland, Randy Mosteller, John McClain, Jason Dean and Mark Floyd. Members of the Hall of Fame Committee include Chairman France Adams, Trudy Swilling, Pete Adams, Howard and Gold. The group also works with Murray County High School administrators to maintain the Athletic Hall of Fame.

The group’s spring project each year is the awarding of scholarships to graduating MCHS seniors. One is the Allen Ross Memorial Athletic Scholarship while the other is the Academic Scholarship, named in memory of Anne Harris Brindle, a longtime leader of the association. Last year’s scholarship winners were Allison Weaver, Jaide Johns and Simon Etheridge. Scholarship committee members include Gold, Pete Adams and Andrew Bowen.

Annual membership in the alumni association continues to be only $10 per year while life memberships are $100. Alumni Hall of Fame inductees are awarded honorary memberships. Membership is open to anyone who graduated from MCHS or attended the school for at least two years. Current and former faculty/staff with at least 10 years of service are also eligible to join.
