Contributed photoNikki Barrett's first-grade class at Varnell Elementary School has solved the age-old question: cats or dogs? The answer, by popular vote, dogs. As Barrett's class transitioned from fiction to nonfiction texts, her students used their best reading and writing skills to tackle the argument and convince their peers which animal is best and why. The unit concluded on Election Day with each student casting his or her vote for their favorite animal. The class also held a coin drive and raised $100 for the Humane Society of Northwest Georgia.
