  • During this time of year there are so many different holiday traditions. In the past I have done research on traditions around the world. One tradition that I found interesting was Iceland’s Christmas Book Flood, also called Jólabókafló.

This phrase or term is used in Iceland for the annual release of new books occurring in the months before Christmas. These books are then purchased as presents to be given on Christmas Eve. Many of the books are then read that very night.

That is one tradition that any book lover would enjoy. In the spirit of the season, I thought I would share a few picture books that you can enjoy. These are all great as gifts for the kids or as family read-alouds.

“The Last Slice a Three Kings Day Treat,” written by Melissa Seron Richardson and illustrated by Monica Arnoldo, is a sweet, funny book about one girl’s journey to overcome her fears, and explores the tradition of Three Kings Day. At the end of the story you can find a page filled with information about the holiday.

“The Truth About Mrs. Claus” is a book written by New York Times bestselling author Meena Harris and illustrated by Keisha Morris. This story is about Amelia, an elf worried about disappointing her family. This book embodies the themes of empowerment, honoring family traditions and believing in Christmas magic.

“Eight Candles and a Tree,” an engaging book written by Simone Bloom Nathan and illustrated by Brian Barber, is about Sophie, who introduces her friend Tommy to her family’s traditions which blend Hanukkah and Christmas. This is a great book for families who celebrate both Christmas and Hanukkah.

“My First Kwanzaa” was written and illustrated by Karen Katz. It is a great introduction to the holiday. This story can help young children learn and join in the festivities of the seven days of Kwanzaa. I love that they sprinkle Swahili words and pronunciations throughout the book.

All of these books can be found at the Dalton-Whitfield County Public Library. If you are looking for some great books to read to your kids then look no further than your local library.
