Greetings, readers.
Dreary, cold weather got you down? Well, I have a few events to tell you about that may be just the thing to get you out of the house.

On Monday, Feb. 5, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. author Millicent Flake will lead a writing workshop for adults. Titled “Beat the Winter Blues with Creative Writing,” Flake promises a fun evening of writing prompts and useful tips to chase away the doldrums. I got to know her from my time at the Calhoun library and she is great at sharing her expertise. She recently published the book “Moving Beyond: Journeying Through Life’s Changes.” Learn more about her at https://maflake.com/.
On Tuesday, Feb. 13, at 3 p.m. Tiffani Holbrook from the Northwest Georgia Area Agency on Aging will lead a one-hour information session about becoming a “Dementia Friend.” You’ll learn what dementia is, what it’s like to live with the disease and glean some tips for communicating with people who have dementia. You don’t need to be a dementia expert to become a Dementia Friend.
On Thursday, Feb. 22, at 1 p.m. I will lead a hands-on training for homeschool families (or anyone, really) interested in learning how to use all of the library’s research tools. We will cover the PINES search engine, our microfilm reader, GALILEO and more.
The very next day, Feb. 23, from 4 to 5 p.m. is our monthly teen activity time. Victoria (our Young Adult coordinator) will have a chocolate dipping bar set up for teens and tweens. We’ll have fruit, pretzels, nuts and more that you can dunk in delectable white or milk chocolate.
And teens certainly don’t want to miss our NERF War on Monday, Feb. 26, from 5 to 7 p.m. It is open to rising sixth- through 12th- graders and they will have the run of the library after hours. We play Capture the Flag and Humans v. Zombies, we eat snacks and cut loose for a couple of hours.
All of these events are free. You can just show up, no reservations are required. Of course, these events are in addition to our regularly scheduled programming such as weekly storytime for children, our monthly adult book club, Baby & Toddler Time and our monthly movie where we serve freshly-popped popcorn.
