• Hamilton Medical Center will offer Dare to CARE, a free, two-part comprehensive vascular disease program focusing on early detection and education, at 6 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 7, and at scheduled evening appointment times on Tuesday, Feb. 8. Dare to CARE will be held at the Brown Conference Center. The program is offered quarterly and is free to men and women over the age of 60 and for those over 50 with vascular risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, smoking or family history of vascular disease. • The Dalton City Council will meet in the City Hall Council Chambers. A planning session is at 5:30 p.m. and the mayor and council meeting is at 6 p.m.

• Varnell Mayor Dan Peeples presents his “2020 Vision” for Varnell, sharing the potential of where the city is now and where it could be in the year 2020. The meeting will be in the city gym beginning at 7 p.m.

• In celebration of Black History Month, Dalton State College is offering a recital of traditional spirituals and art songs by African-American composers. The concert features soprano Jennifer Sparks, accompanied by pianist Kris Carlisle. It will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Goodroe Auditorium of Gignilliat Memorial Hall and is free and open to the public; seating is first come, first served.

• The 2011 Relay For Life of Murray County kickoff will be at 6 p.m. at the Murray County Senior Center.

• The Book Nook at 229 N. Hamilton St. in Dalton will host a book signing by Will Headrick from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. His latest book is “Coal by the Sack,” described as the true story of a boy’s coming of age in southern Appalachia in the ‘50s and ‘60s. It is Headrick’s own story of poverty, the love and support of family, abuse and misunderstanding. Headrick, known as Jerry to family and friends, grew up in the Dalton and Chatsworth areas and graduated from Murray County High School in 1960. He has served churches in North Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky and Alabama through pastoral work. He now lives on the Alabama Gulf Coast. “Coal by the Sack” is the first of a trilogy called the Will and Nita series.

• The Share America Foundation will host Archie Watkins, formerly of the Inspirations, and singer/pianist Tim Veazey at Sacred Sounds Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at the Ringgold Depot. The event is a fundraiser for the Pearl and Floyd Franks Scholarship Fund that helps musicians achieve higher education. Donations for tickets are adults, $5; children 5 and under, free with adult. • The U.S. Forest Service will hold a meeting in Dalton for the public to discuss the long-term management of recreation trails on the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest. • The polyrhythmic spectacle of Soul Steps appears at 7:30 p.m. in the Goodroe Auditorium of Dalton State College’s Gignilliat Memorial Hall in recognition of Black History Month. The troop of step artists, which was established in 2005, “concentrates on the body as a percussive, story-telling instrument.” Step dancing has its origins in 1925s African-American culture and is said to bear a close resemblance to South African gumboot dancing. The community is invited to attend the free program which is sponsored by the Dalton State Campus Activities Board.

• Murray County voters will decide whether to renew the current 1 percent education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (ESPLOST) to pay down debt left from building North Murray High School.

• The Walk MS Northwest Georgia 5K fundraising walk will be held at Berry College in Rome. Walk MS benefits the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Georgia Chapter, by raising money for client programs and research and increases public awareness of the disease. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the walk begins at 10 a.m. It is expected to be over by noon. There is no cost, but participants can raise money. • Natasha Borzilova, the former lead singer and acoustic guitarist for the Grammy-nominated Russian band Bering Strait, will perform at Dalton’s Freight Depot at 7 p.m. as part of the 2011 WoodSongs Coffee House concert series. • The 2011 Bill Gregory Healthcare Classic celebrates its fifth year of honoring the life of Dr. Bill Gregory at Bradley Wellness Center in Dalton. The first ever “Dr. Gregory Wellness Fair” will be held on race morning. Schedule of events: 7 a.m., registration; 8 a.m., “Roll, Walk, Run” 5K; 9:15 a.m., “Kid’s Classic” 2K. Cost is $15 for pre-registration ($12 if you sign up through your school/employer/medical practice/church/government sector). Overall 5K winners receive a cash prize, age group awards will be presented in both 5K and 2K, participation awards will also be given.
