Spigel Concert Series presents ‘An Evening with The Brookwoods’ at the Guild

Through the generosity of the Community Foundation of Northwest Georgia and Wells Fargo Bank, the Creative Arts Guild is continuing its Spigel Concert Series now in its third year.

Organizers came together to create a series that would appeal to a broad audience as well as to families. This year the series includes nine performances, of which five are free, and included are a variety of music styles and puppetry.

This Friday, the second in the series, a St. Patty’s Day Dinner Concert, will feature the popular band The Brookwoods accompanied by an Irish meal catered by The Filling Station.

The Brookwoods started playing together in 1963, performing predominantly folk music from that time period. Bands like the Kingston Trio, Peter, Paul and Mary, Tom Paxton and Gordon Lightfoot are the groups that influence their music. For Celtic celebrations the band has added some Irish and bluegrass tunes.

Hilliard Jolly and George Davies were the original founders of the group, adding Bill Sims a couple years later. After nearly a 40-year hiatus, they re-formed for the opening of the Wink Theatre, adding Jim Todd on bass and Jayne Todd on female vocals, and have been performing for the last several years. This year’s performance, as hinted by Jim Todd, will feature a few surprises for the audience.

This year’s playlist includes “Danny Boy,” “Parting Glass,” “Gilgarry Mountain,” “Risin’ of the Moon,” “Cliffs of Doneen,” “Molly Malone,” “Star of the County Down,” “Black Velvet Band,” “Roddy McCorley,” “Loch Lomand,” “Wild Rover,” “Men of Erin,” “All of the Hard Days are Gone,” “Wild Mountain Thyme,” “I Know Where I’m Goin’,” “Isn’t It Grand” and “Fields of Athenry.”

Leanne Lawson, event director states, “The Brookwoods put on a great show and have a great rapport with the audience. The St. Patty’s Day evening is always a lot of fun even if you don’t have a bit of Irish in you!”

The Filling Station has put together a wonderful menu so that even those of us that aren’t Irish might be compelled to kiss the blarney stone! The evening’s fare starts with Shepherd’s Pie accompanied by roasted carrots, green salad and assorted breads and desserts. This year’s 50th anniversary event sponsor, Eagle Rock North Distributing, will provide bar choices to include Irish stouts and wines. Irish coffee and teas will be available as well.
