The Bookshelf: The Dalton-Whitfield County Public Library is more than books

The public library is so much more than books. Here are some of the words I associate with the library: learn, connect, community, literacy, communicate, family, technology, free, entertain and everyone.
Besides books you can create, learn and be entertained by fun, free events for all ages at the library. A few of the programs and events coming up at the Dalton-Whitfield County Public Library:

Fridays at 11 a.m. Legos: Kids can play with our big collection of Lego and Duplo bricks. Drop in and try a different Lego challenge each week or just enjoy some building time. Kindergarten through fifth grade but all ages welcome. No program on Nov. 10 and Nov. 24.
Fridays from 4 to 6 p.m. TnT: Game On at the Library: Tweens and teens are welcome to explore and enjoy our library’s collection of board games and video game consoles. Sixth to 12th grades. No program on Nov. 10 and Nov. 24.
Thursday, Nov. 9, from 4 to 5 p.m. Paws to Read: Kids can practice their reading and develop social and emotional skills during this monthly program. Stop by and visit with dogs from the Alliance of Therapy Dogs in the children’s department. First to fifth grade.
Monday, Nov. 13, at 4:30 p.m. Bird Nerd: Binoculars 101. Do you have a pair of binoculars stuffed in a drawer somewhere? Want to begin bird watching but don’t know where to start? We’ll practice good binocular use and get the basics of how to identify birds. Presented by Jennifer DesRochers with the Northwest Georgia Nature Club. Ages 18-plus. Spanish translator will be present.
Tuesday, Nov. 14, at 4:30 p.m. TnT Art: Mirror Painting. Design personalized mirrors that reflect your unique style. All supplies provided. Sixth to 12th grade.
Thursday, Nov. 16, at 4 p.m. Beginner ESOL (English for speakers of other languages) course: Interested in becoming a student of the English language? Come, practice and learn with Dalton State College Professor Brian Hibbs for a beginner-level English course. Ages 18-plus. Spanish translator will be present.

Thursday, Nov. 16, at 4:30 p.m. Learn at the Library Cricut: Holiday Ornament. Create a glitter ornament with the Cricut. A fun decoration for your home or tree. All supplies provided. Ages 19-plus.
Monday, Nov. 20, from 4 to 5 p.m. Kids Library Lab: Spy School Invisible Ink. Make invisible ink and a revealer to send secret messages. First through fifth grade.
Monday, Nov. 20,at 4:30 p.m. Financial Literacy: Learn about current financial literacy resources from a certified banker. Develop your financial literacy with the library. Presented by Harrison Stafford from Georgia United Credit Union. Ages 18-plus. Spanish translator will be present.
Besides having free programs and activities at the library, we also love to be a part of community events. In September and October we had representatives from the library at the Festival of Fine Arts and Crafts, Next Chapter Con, Prater’s Mill and middle school literacy nights.
This month we will be at Grateful Dalton. I hope to see you there!
