Alcoholics Anonymous

• Al-Anon meetings are held in the basement of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church on Mondays and Thursdays at 8 p.m. and on Wednesday mornings at 11 at Christ the King Lutheran Church. Al-Anon has but one purpose, to help families and friends of alcoholics. Anyone who is affected by someone else’s alcoholism is welcome. St. Mark’s Episcopal Church is at 901 W. • One Day at a Time, an Alcoholics Anonymous group, meets Monday through Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sundays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at 5:30 p.m. at the Dalton Serenity Club, 720 N. Hamilton St.

• Sisters in Sobriety, an Alcoholics Anonymous group, meets Tuesdays at 7 p.m. and Saturdays at 11 a.m. at Christ Community Church, 806 W. Walnut Ave. Meetings are for women only.

• The 12 Steps and 12 Traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous meets Tuesdays at 7 p.m. at the Varnell Community Center, 100-253 S. Spring St.

Other

• The Anna Shaw Children’s Institute hosts Reading around the Tree on Wednesdays at 11 a.m. for all children who would like to attend. Children will gather around the tree in the facility while volunteers read books to them and then lead a craft related to the book. All craft supplies are provided free of charge. The program will take place each Wednesday except for the holiday weeks of Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s and when Independence Day falls on a Wednesday.

• A Breast Cancer Support Group meets at 6 p.m. the first Tuesday of each month at the Mack Gaston Community Center. The group offers an informal setting where anyone going through treatment and breast cancer survivors can be supported through the fellowship of others of similar experiences. • The Charles “Judy” Poag Murray County Senior Center has a Dance Night from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. for seniors 50 and over on the third Tuesday of each month. Admission is $5. • The Chatsworth Downtown Development Authority meets the fourth Monday of each month at 5:30 p.m. Meetings are at the Chatsworth-Murray County Chamber of Commerce office. The public is invited.

• The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints teaches family history classes on the third Thursday of each month from 6:30 to 8 p.m. This is a free class and you can bring your laptop. The church is at 610 Shugart Road.

• The Civil War Roundtable of Dalton Inc. meets the third Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Crown Gardens and Archives at 715 Chattanooga Ave. The Civil War Roundtable seeks to preserve history by sharing knowledge. Speakers have included authors, historians and researchers speaking on a variety of topics pertaining to the Civil War era, as well as interesting video presentations. • Dalton Place Senior Living has a Senior Caregiver Support Group on the second and fourth Thursday of each month from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Speakers promote discussion about issues or gather ideas about caregiving for seniors. Organizers say the group “is a safe place to vent without judgment and to get comfort without pity but with understanding.” The agenda is centered around caregivers’ requests. • Hamilton Hospice is looking for volunteers. Some activities include home improvement projects, sitting with patients to give caregivers a break or office assistance (filing, mailing, making phone calls). Hospice volunteers go through a brief training and orientation. There is no minimum requirement of hours to serve. • The final scheduled date for a Whitfield Healthcare Foundation Trust Committee meeting for 2019 is Nov. 14. The meeting will be at 12:30 p.m. in the Whitfield Healthcare Foundation conference room in the Burkett Building at Hamilton Medical Center.

Ongoing

• The Blunt House, which dates to 1848, is open every Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on request. The current exhibit is Southern Dimity coverlets. The Blunt House is at 506 S. Thornton Ave.

• The Heritage Room at the Huff House has a collection of native American artifacts that honor the early inhabitants of Whitfield County. A blowgun with darts and stickball racquets with a leather ball are authentic items made by Cherokee craftsmen, and there is a copy of Sequoyah’s syllabary. • The “County Connection” program stations members of the staff of Rep. Tom Graves, R-Ranger, in counties across the 14th District to provide a personal link to Congress for Georgians who may not be able to visit the permanent district offices in Dalton and Rome. In Murray County, the program is at the Courthouse Annex, 121 N. Fourth Ave., from 1 to 3 p.m. on Oct. 22. Whitfield County does not have “County Connection” days since it is home to one of Graves’ two permanent congressional offices that have full-time staff.

Calendar Wednesday

• The Downtown Dalton Development Authority board meets at 8 a.m. at the Freight Depot. The public is welcome to attend.

• The Georgia Commission on Freight & Logistics, co-chaired by House Transportation Committee Chairman Kevin Tanner, R-Dawsonville, meets from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Dalton State College. The commission was established by House Resolution 37, which was adopted in the 2019 legislative session. The commission will study Georgia’s freight and logistics network and find ways to move freight more efficiently throughout Georgia while spurring economic growth and job creation. The commission will issue its report to the lieutenant governor and speaker of the House by Dec. 31. The meeting will be in Gignilliat Hall, Wright School of Business (Business Hub Room), 650 College Drive.

• Compassion House hosts A Night of Compassion, benefiting Compassion House, from 6 to 9 p.m. at 901 Chester St. in Dalton. There will be dinner and entertainment, as the Murray Arts Council presents selections from its summer production of “Junie B. Jones: A Musical.” Compassion House is a visitation center for children in foster care and their biological families and has been in operation since 2006. • Author and historian Bob Young will present “Searching for Civil War Gold” at the October meeting of the Civil War Round Table of Dalton at 7 p.m. at the Whitfield-Murray Historical Society headquarters at 715 Chattanooga Ave. in Dalton. Young is a former mayor of Augusta and has starred in several movies and television programs. He is one of the historians featured in the History Channel’s documentary “The Curse of Civil War Gold.” Copies of his books will be available for purchase at the meeting, including “Graball Road,” which is the true story of an unsolved mystery of the robbery of a wagon train loaded with gold coins that occurred in Lincoln County in 1865, and “Nish,” which tells the story of the Rev. • The Creative Arts Guild and Dalton State College host the Dalton State Trio at 7:30 p.m. at 520 W. Waugh St. in Dalton. The recital will feature an eclectic mix of works for varied combinations of flute, horn, double bass, piano and guitar. Saturday

• The 25th annual Conasauga River Watershed Clean-up is from 9 a.m. to noon. This event is part of Georgia’s Rivers Alive statewide waterways cleanup. Volunteers are needed to clean up streambanks at seven sites in Whitfield and Murray counties. Organizers say there will be free T-shirts and giveaways for volunteers, and plenty of litter, so come and help make the streams cleaner. • A Cisco School Reunion begins at 10 a.m. at the historic school site. Attendees will take a walk down memory lane viewing a video of reunions from the 1990s. • A Harvest Moon Bash benefiting the Whitfield County-Dalton Day Care Center is from 7:30 to 11 p.m. at the Creative Arts Guild. There will be a costume contest and silent auction. • The Black Bear Festival is in Chatsworth. Admission is $3 (children 6 and under are free). • Join the Whitfield County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day to find out how to be better prepared for disasters by completing the CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) course. • Murray Arts Council holds its fourth annual Quilt Exhibit. Volunteers will meet at the location of each of the agencies involved. Volunteers should wear clothes that can be worked in and comfortable shoes, preferably tennis shoes. Volunteers will spend the day doing basic landscaping work: paint the walkway, cut grass, weed, remove pine straw, parking lot cleanup, paint the lobby and remove and apply vinyl decals. Event: GreenHouse. Friday and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Meeting location: When you sign up to volunteer the address will be sent to you. The volunteers will construct a closet that holds plain clothing for victims who are asked to leave their clothing behind for evidentiary purposes. Event: Sound the Alarm, Save A Life. Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Meeting location: United Way, 816 S. Thornton Ave. in Dalton. The United Way and the Dalton Fire Department are teaming up with the American Red Cross of Northwest Georgia to improve fire safety in the communities most at risk. Teams will canvass neighborhoods to educate residents on fire safety and install smoke alarms at no charge. Spanish speakers needed.

Oct. 26

• The Murray County class of 1969 has its 50th class reunion at the Dalton Golf & Country Club. Check-in starts at 5 p.m. with pictures at 5:30. The meal begins between 6 and 6:30. Cost is $30 for single or $60 for a couple. This will include both the meal and entertainment for the night. Dress is business casual. All reservations are due by Sunday, Sept. 1. • St. Mark’s Preschool is hosting its annual Chili Supper at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church at 901 W. Emery St. It is drive-thru only from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Each meal is $8 and includes chili, crackers and dessert. The dessert is a brownie from Mama Wilson’s Homemade Cookies and Cakes. Nov. 2

• The 60th annual Kiwanis Pancake Day is at Dalton Green from 6 a.m. until noon. Anyone eating under the big tent can have all of the pancakes and sausage they care to eat along with coffee, milk and orange juice. Advance tickets are $7 each. The cost on the morning of the breakfast is $8. To-go plates will also be available. All Kiwanis members are selling tickets. A number of local businesses are also selling tickets. Look for the signs advertising them.

• The Friends of the Library book sale is at the Dalton-Whitfield County Public Library from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Nov. 7

• The Board of Trustees of the Northwest Georgia Regional Library System, serving Gordon, Murray and Whitfield counties, holds its regular quarterly meeting at 5 p.m. at the Chatsworth-Murray County Public Library, 706 Old Dalton-Ellijay Road, Chatsworth. This meeting is open to the public. The board will consider agenda items and actions and review proposed amendments and/or updates to the constitution and bylaws. • American Legion Post 112 sponsors the North Georgia Veterans Day Parade in downtown Dalton at 10 a.m. This year’s parade theme is “Veterans: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.” After the parade there will be a service at the American Legion Post 112 where there will be a speaker and recognition of this year’s “Veteran of the Year.” A light lunch will be served.

• A Walk to Fight Suicide, the Murray County Out of the Darkness Walk, is in Veterans Memorial Park in Chatsworth. Register at asfp.org/MurrayCounty. Check-in begins at 11 a.m. The walk begins at noon. The walk is hosted by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

Nov. 12

• Johnny “Joey” Jones, a Whitfield County native and a Fox News contributor, gives the keynote address at the Greater Dalton Chamber of Commerce banquet at the Dalton Convention Center. The evening begins at 6 p.m. with a one-hour reception and dinner and program following. The evening includes recognition of the Diplomat of the Year, Small Business Person of the Year and the Chairman’s Award. Chairman of the Board Kevin Brunson (FirstBank) will pass the gavel to incoming Chair Tom Bundros (Dalton Utilities). • The Dalton Whitfield Murray Retired Educators Association meets at noon at Western Sizzlin, 501 Legion Drive. The program, which begins at 12:45 p.m., features local legislators and the Teacher Retirement System.

• “Let’s Feud!” Those words will be uttered numerous times during the Game of Feuds fundraiser at Walnut Hill Farm to benefit the Looper Speech and Hearing Center. • The Downtown Dalton Development Authority Board of Directors has its annual meeting and elections from 5 to 7 p.m. at City Hall. The focus of the evening will be a progress report on the Downtown Master Plan as well as a look forward to initiatives for 2020. The DDDA board encourages all downtown property owners and merchants in particular to attend. In addition, the board will conduct its annual board elections. There are two seats on the board to be voted on at the meeting, a downtown property owner and a downtown business owner. These seats are currently occupied by Juan Lama and Jane Marie Wilson, respectively. Their three-year terms end on Dec. 31. Both are eligible for and seeking reelection. • Dalton State College presents “Little Shop of Horrors” at 7:30 nightly in the Goodroe Auditorium on campus. Tickets are $7.

Nov. 23

• The Dalton Lions Club has its annual $10,000 Giveaway/Steak Dinner at the North Georgia Fairgrounds. Tickets are $100 each, which entitles the holder to a steak dinner for two with all the trimmings catered by Outback Steakhouse of Dalton. The meal will be served between 5 and 6 p.m. with the drawing beginning at 6 p.m. The drawing is a reverse draw down and the final ticket drawn wins the grand prize of $10,000. • Heartlite Hospice Dalton hosts its inaugural Black Tie Gala to raise funds for the Hospice Promise Foundation, a nonprofit arm of LHC Group Inc., from 6 to 9 p.m. at The Farm, 187 S. Goose Hill Road. The Hospice Promise Foundation assists patients and families with essential, non-hospice related needs. All funds raised will be used to provide assistance for Heartlite Hospice patients in the northwest Georgia community. The event’s guest speaker is state Sen. Chuck Payne, R-Dalton.
