Morris Innovative’s FBLA wins two state awards

Morris Innovative High School’s chapter of FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) received fifth place in the state for Largest Percentage Increase in Membership for Georgia, as well as the Bronze Chapter of the Year Award for receiving 759 chapter points.

The Morris Innovative chapter grew its membership from 10 to 39 students this year.

To obtain the Chapter of the Year points, adviser Sheila Yarbrough explained that the group has to extensively develop an agenda for the following year, beginning in March 2017.

“You have to go to Summer Leadership and Officer Training Summits (SLOTS), attend the Fall Leadership Conference, have competitors in both the region and state leadership conferences, and have a lot of community and school service projects throughout the year,” she said.

The group documents each project and sends a final document to state. Their service projects included helping with the community job fair, serving as community translators, raising money for Puerto Rico hurricane victims and collecting church blankets and cards for those in need. The chapter must also have students who obtain their Business Achievement Award to gain Chapter of the Year.

Morris Innovative students held at least 10 FBLA chapter meetings. The group worked on the state project, in which the purpose is to help members develop a logical argument for ethical decision-making and ethical impact in society. They also sent letters to Congress explaining the benefits of FBLA, attended other events for FBLA and recruited new members by creating brochures, cards and posters to advertise what FBLA is.
