Mustangs capture a thriller

Eastbrook’s Sammy Torres scored a goal in sudden death, providing a 5-4 victory over Bagley and pushing the Mustangs into today’s North Georgia Middle School Athletic League championship soccer match.
The game was tied at 1 after regulation and Torres had the Mustangs’ only goal in regulation. The shootout was tied at 3 and Eastbrook gained the upper hand with four penalty kicks by Ramiro Madrigal, Armando Morales, Cesar Maldonado and Torres.
Luis Jimenez scored Bagley’s regulation goal. Luis Cruz, Jimenez and Jose Guzman scored in the penalty kick session.
Eastbrook (9-1) will play Dalton in today’s championship game at Valley Point. Dalton defeated Valley Point, 5-0, to reach the final.
Dalton’s Lady Cougars got past Eastbrook, 3-1, and plays Westside for the championship at 4:30. Westside upset No. 1 seed Bagley, 2-1, on penalty kicks.
Westside girls 2, Bagley 1: Kelsey Kirk and Brooke Gray scored on penalty kicks after the teams played through regulation and two overtimes in a scoreless battle. It was Bagley’s only loss in seven games this season.
“We were fortunate to get to the end and have a chance to win,” Westside coach Kenny Hill said. “It was a very hard-fought games and both teams played exceptionally well.”
Hill praised the play of goalie Marlena Matos. The Lady Rockets are 4-2-2.
Dalton 3, Eastbrook 1: Lisa Mata scored two goals for the Lady Cougars. Brizeyda Lopez had one goal and Sara Apobaca was credited with an assist.
“I think we surpassed our expectations this season,” Dalton coach Craig Gunter said. “We had a lot of people step up offensively.
Eastbrook finishes 4-1-3.
Dalton boys 5, Valley Point 0: Omar Hernandez scored two goals while Elver Urgesguli, Alex Galegois and Elver Urgesguli each had one for the Cougars (6-0-1).
Goalies Juan Barrera and Antonio Olevera shared the shutout in goal.
Golf
Dalton girls 100, Northwest 102: Lacie Coquerille led the Lady Cats with a 47 to capture low medalist honors and Whitney McWhorter posted a 53.
Dee Dee Davenport and Anna Bradley each shot 51 for the Lady Bruins.
Gator Fouche led the Cats with a 44 while Michael Roan had a 47, Terry Evans a 48 and Cody Parker a 49.
LFO’s Rudi Lee took medalist honors with a 40 in the match played at Battlefield Golf Course. Scott Melton added a 46, Trey Forehand a 52 and Jake Hubbs a 54.
Soccer
Dalton JV boys 3, Ringgold 0: The Cats’ Daniel Lawson and Saul Maldonado scored goals and Ethan Bennett countered on a penalty kick as Dalton ran its record to 10-1 in the season finale.
Sergio Pasco and Luis Gutierrez recorded assists and Fernando Aragon got the shutout in goal.
Baseball
Dalton JV 13, Woodland 3: Carter Crutchfield went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs to lead the Cats (12-2).
Will Stansell contributed two hits, including a double, and also drove in three runs. Matthew Sheets had a single and double with two RBIs. Tyler Epps added a run-scoring double.
Epps pitched five innings and struck out seven.
