Cougars win in rout to remain undefeated

Dalton Middle School’s Tre Beck had two rushing touchdowns and threw for two, leading the eighth-grade Cougars to a 46-0 rout of Lake Forest at Harmon Field on Thursday.

Beck’s TD runs covered 50 and 34 yards. He had a 63-yard pass to Tre Bonds and a 5-yarder to Cody Patterson. Beck ran for a pair of two-point conversions against the visitors from Cleveland, Tenn.

Nick Urbain scored on a 48-yard run and Stephen Jones hit paydirt from 11 yards out for the Cougars (4-0).

Bonds passed to Shaquae Robinson for a conversion and Jones hit Brady Willocks for another one.

Zach Abbott came up with a fumble recovery.

— Valley Point 28, Gladden 14: Matt Cobb and Carter Gillean each scored twice for the Green Waves (2-2).

Cobb scored on a 90-yard kickoff return and 25-yard run. Gillean had short TD runs of 3 and 1 yard. Gillean caught a conversion pass from Cobb and threw a conversion pass to Allen Moore.

Jonathan Lara scored on a 38-yard run and Kendall Rymer countered from 18 yards out for the Warriors (1-3).

— Eastbrook 12, New Hope 6: David Rayborn returned a kickoff 70 yards for a third-quarter touchdown and Coty Burch scampered into the end zone from 3 yards out for the Mustangs (1-3).

Nick Stavrow scored on a 2-yard run for the Kodiaks (2-2). Nick Sullivan was credited with six tackles and Stavrow had 5 1/2. Tyler Higgins had a 27-yard reception.

— North Whitfield 22, Westside 8: Alex Heard raced for touchdowns on runs of 60 and 25 yards and ran for both conversions as the Pioneers (4-0) rolled.

Colter Creswell returned an interception 70 yards for the Pioneers’ other touchdown.



Seventh grade

— Dalton 30, Lake Forest 8: Marvin Hill scored on runs of 18, 19 and 54 yards to pace the Cougars (3-1). Hill also ran for a two-point conversion.

Hunter Cleary caught a 70-yard touchdown pass from Cole Calfee for the Cougars’ other touchdown.

— Gladden 18, Valley Point 0: Deron Hill had 175 yards rushing, including a 45-yard touchdown gallop for the Warriors (4-0).

Josh Cole had a 6-yard scoring run and Brady Todd threw a 35-yard pass to Garrett Sexton.

— New Hope 12, Eastbrook 12: O’Shea Hill scored both touchdowns for the Kodiaks (1-1-2) on runs of 77 and 1 yard. Hill finished with 149 yards rushing.

Kyle Brock had three tackles for New Hope.

— North Whitfield 12, Westside 0: Jarrod Farmer returned a kickoff 60 yards for a TD and threw a 40-yard scoring pass to Koty Gates for the Pioneers (3-1).

— Christian Heritage 30, North Cobb Christian 0: Hunter Knight and Josh Barnes each scored twice for the Lions (2-1).



Varsity softball

— Northwest Whitfield 10, Murray County 0: Loren Shook pitched a three-hit shutout while Becca Renfroe had two hits and three RBIs for the Lady Bruins (10-7).

Shook struck out five.

Taylor Staten went 3-for-5 with two RBIs while Callie Thomas had two hits and one RBI. Stephanie Sewell, Kayla Piorkowski and Ashley Flood all had two hits.



Varsity volleyball

— Southeast’s Lady Raiders defeated Gordon Lee 25-21, 25-18, 25-7 in a best-of-five match as Ana Jones set a school record with 39 assists. She held the old mark with 26.

Heather Payne and Kelsey Blevins each had 17 kills while Taylor Oliver added six kills and Payne had five aces for Southeast (15-8).



Varsity X-country

— Murray County’s boys and girls won a four-way meet in Ellijay against Gilmer, Fannin and Forsyth Central.

The Indians’ Josh Stanley ran a 19:54 and finished second while Cody Adams (20:02) took third and Ryan Osborn (21:03) was sixth.

In girls competition, the Lady Indians’ Martha Gonzalez won the meet with a time of 23:32. McKinsi Lents was third at 24:41 and Liz Purciaga finished in 28:01.



JV football

— Dalton 12, Ringgold 8: Tevin Collins scored on a 35-yard run and also had a 45-yard punt return to lead the Cats (1-0). Blake Raber had a 2-yard touchdown run. Stryker Brown was 8-for-10 with 82 yards passing.

Derrick Young had a 35-yard kickoff return.

— Southeast 36, Gordon Central 6: The visiting Warriors scored first, but the Raiders then reeled off 36 straight points, including a TD on the first play from scrimmage after Gordon Central’s score.

Damond O’Neal got the Southeast offense going with his scoring run. Then O’Neal threw a TD pass to Zach Harper and Tevin Broome picked up a Warrior fumble and returned it for a touchdown.

Jeremy Bishop had a kickoff return and run from scrimmage for scores and Bishop tossed a TD pass to Chance Beaver.

Southeast (2-0) beat LFO, 18-0, last week.

— Northwest 12, Ridgeland 6: Chad Keeter and Mike Martin scored touchdowns for the Bruins (2-0). Brian Bush recovered a fumble.



JV softball

— Northwest 11, Murray 10: Halen Weeks went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs to pace the Lady Bruins.

Kimber Beard went 2-for-3, including a triple, and drove in two runs. Katie Vaughn was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two stolen bases.

Beard was the starting pitcher and was roughed up for five runs on just two hits in two innings. She struck out three and walked five. Savannah Pierce finished on the mound and also yielded five runs and gave up two hits. She walked seven and struck out one.



JV volleyball

— Southeast’s Lady Raiders knocked off Gordon Lee 26-24, 25-23 and improved to 6-1 on the season.

Shelby McFarland led the Lady Raiders with seven kills while Kelsey Stanley added four. Lynsey King and Casey Crump each had seven assists.



MS X-country

— In boys competition, Westside beat New Hope 10-33, New Hope beat North Whitfield 10-33, New Hope beat North Whitfield 10-32.

The top five runners were: Tucker Sheram, Westside, 12:51; James Carter, New Hope, 13:07; Mason Hester, Westside, 13:23; Josh Bailey, Westside, 13:46; and Tanner Quarles, New Hope, 13:59.

— In girls matchups, New Hope beat North Whitfield 10-38, Westside beat North Whitfield 13-29, and New Hope beat Westside 20-35.

The top five runners were: Shelby Wilson, New Hope, 13:25; Maddie Richards, New Hope, 13:57; Kaitlyn Wade, New Hope, 14:17; Cindy Carter, New Hope, 14:31; and Laura Stevens, Westside, 14:49.

Runners ran two laps on New Hope Middle School’s 1-mile course.



MS softball

— Fannin 8, Dalton 0: McKinze Brown collected a hit and scored the Lady Cougars’ run. Carson Hagin also had a hit. Dalton is 2-4.
