Jamie Jones: Where’s the logic, McMahon?

Donald Trump pledged to refund every ticket to the “Raw” show in Green Bay, Wis., earlier this week. Too bad fans couldn’t get their time back, too.

Another hastily cobbled-together storyline came to a swift end on Monday night as Trump, the self-proclaimed billionaire, sold WWE’s flagship brand back to its founder, Vince McMahon — for twice what Trump paid. It’s hard to believe WWE officials would plan such an earth-shattering event to last a mere week.

Call it the billion-dollar letdown.

McMahon never adequately explained to fans why he sold “Raw.” Was he burned out? Was it strictly a business deal? Did he want to spend more time with his family? Fans will never know.

Other than the ticket refund (which WWE officials say will cost about $235,000), the only other “big change” Trump introduced was a commercial-free episode. Commercial-free? Yes. Advertising-free? Not even close. From the unyielding ads for “Transformers 2” to the two buckets of chicken resting on the announcer’s table in front of a drooling Jerry Lawler, commercial breaks would have been a welcome respite.

WWE showed its disregard of rational again and again. McMahon claimed that Trump would bankrupt McMahon by eliminating commercials and refunding tickets. Why would Trump bankrupt McMahon if he didn’t own “Raw” anymore?

Then, McMahon quickly took Trump’s offer to buy “Raw” back for twice the purchase price. Neither billionaire said what that purchase price was. Was it $1 or $1 trillion? Fans need a reference point.

McMahon immediately fired Trump. He can McMahon fire someone who is not employed by “Raw” or WWE? Logic, anyone?

A reference point and logic. That would be a departure form the norm for WWE.

Bobby Lashley.

After watching Terry Funk get smacked around in “Road House,” Jamie Jones thinks The Dalton Little Theatre should put on a performance of the 1980s classic. Jones, who volunteers to play Wade Garrett, can be reached at jamiejones@daltoncitizen.com or at (706) 272-7723.
