CARTERSVILLE — Woodland-Bartow place-kicker Guillermo Serrano kicked three field goals and the Wildcats went on to defeat visiting Murray County, 30-14, Friday night in Sub-region 7A-4A football action at Wildcat Stadium.

The Wildcats (3-5, 2-3) built a 13-0 first-half lead and were up 27-7 after three quarters.

Murray County (1-6, 0-4) got two second-half touchdowns from quarterback Taylor Patterson, the first time all season the Indians have scored more than 10 points in a game.

Patterson scored on a 8-yard run with 5:12 left in the third quarter and Ernesto Lopez added the extra point, cutting the Wildcats’ lead to 20-7.

Patterson scored again with 6:08 left in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough to overcome the Wildcats’ early advantage.

“I was proud of the kids there in the second half,” Murray County coach John Zeigler said. “It would be easy to lay down in this situation, but our kids won’t do that.”

Patterson took over the No. 1 quarterback role three weeks ago and has performed admirably for the Indians.

“He’s doing real well,” Zeigler said of his junior signal caller. “He’s going to be a good quarterback because he’s such a competitor.”

The loss was Murray County’s 26th consecutive league loss, dating back to 2006. In that time, the Indians competed for two years in Class 5A before returning to Class 4A in 2008.

Austin Chadwick got the Wildcats on the scoreboard first with a 12-yard touchdown run with 8:50 left in the second quarter. Serrano kicked the extra point.

Then Serrano went to work with his field goals.

He kicked back-to-back 39-yarders in the second quarter, the second one coming as time ran out to end the first half.

Woodland, which leads the series with Murray County, 3-1, got its second touchdown in game game from Jake Jackson on a 12-yard run with 8:50 remaining in the third quarter. Serrano kicked the extra point.

After Patterson’s first score, the Wildcats came right back with Ashton Shelton’s 23-yard touchdown run with 3:59 left in the third and Serran’s extra point gave the Wildcats the 27-7 lead.

Serrano finished off the scoring with a 35-yard field goal with 2:46 left in the game.

Patterson led the Indians with 240 yards of total offense.

Patterson completed 9-of-18 passes for 147 yards, with one interception and rushed 26 times for 93 yards.
