Prep roundup: Bruins fall to Generals on diamond

Northwest Whitfield’s baseball team came up short in its bid for revenge at Heritage-Catoosa on Thursday.

The Bruins fell 7-2 in the non-region game after losing to Heritage 3-0 Monday in Tunnel Hill, where they were held hitless.

Diego Peralta and Edwin Hernandez each had two hits for the Bruins this time around, and Luke Hensley and Nick Sullivan each drove in a run, but the Generals’ two-out rallies were trouble for Northwest (3-2).

In the bottom of the third inning, Bruins pitcher Matt Allen had two outs and no one on base, but walked two straight batters. An error on the next batter scored two runs, and a double followed to give Heritage a 3-1 lead.

Allen was chased after three innings, allowing only one hit and three unearned runs.

A similar sequence happened in the fifth. With two outs and no Heritage runners on base, Andy Whisenant issued a pair of walks and Heritage added to its lead.

Whisenant allowed four hits and four runs in three innings of work.

“The pitching was fine,” Northwest coach Todd Middleton said, “and we only had a couple errors, but they were crucial errors.”

The Bruins struggled to put together a string of hits and left runnners on base early in the game. Northwest had bases loaded with no one out in the top of the first, but managed just a run.

“On offense, we didn’t get too many runners in scoring position (after the first inning),” Middleton said. “We had eight hits, but they were scattered throughout.”
