Northwest, North Murray, Southeast earn splits; Coahulla Creek swept

The Southeast Whitfield High School volleyball team split a pair of matches Tuesday at Sonoraville. The Lady Raiders opened the day successfully, dropping Rome 25-15, 25-20, but struggled against the host Phoenix, falling 25-11, 25-10.
Melisa Fraire served six aces on the day for Southeast while leading the defense, picking up 23 digs. Tania Lopez moved over to the setter role for the Lady Raiders, filling in for Angie Purkey who was out sick, and performed well, dishing out 17 assists.
Offensively, Yesenia Salaises led Southeast with seven kills to go along with nine digs. Alondra Lopez added five kills.
Southeast stands at 2-1 on the season.
* Northwest Whitfield came home even after a tri-match at Gordon Lee. The Lady Bruins (5-3) fell to the hosts 25-16, 25-12, but then defeated Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe 25-20, 25-22.
Peyton Maret led the way with 13 kills, three blocks and three digs between the two matches. Whitley Brooker had eight kills, nine assists and two digs, while MaLane Kyer had 12 assists, 11 digs and one ace. Shelby Gordon also had 20 digs and Lindsey Roberts had five kills and one dig.

* North Murray had a rough opener in a tri-match losing to Fannin 25-9, 25-7. But the Lady Mountaineers bounced back, beating host Cass to close the night, 25-19, 28-26.
In the match against Cass, Avery Bishop led the offense with six kills and Kayla Kvistad was right behind her with five. Hannah Long set them up, handing out 11 assists. Long also added five aces. Savannah Howard also chipped in three aces. North Murray improves to 1-2 on the season.
* Coahulla Creek dropped to 0-4 on the season with a pair of losses to Ridgeland and Heritage in a tri-match. The Lady Colts fell to Ridgeland 25-22, 25-17, and to Heritage 25-13, 25-11.
Rachel Walker turned in a solid evening in the losses, posting six kills and three digs, while Meredith Barber had five kills. Kelsey Bates had three kills and two blocks, Maggie Linder had four kills and two aces, and Brooke Chasteen had six digs.
The Lady Colts return to action Thursday at Southeast Whitfield.
* The North Murray JV split a tri-match. The Mountaineers beat Fannin 25-21, 25-21, and lost to host Cass 25-17, 19-25, 25-19. Mayra Garcia had seven aces for North Murray. Haylee Sutton added four.
Weather
* Five softball games involving local teams were rained out on Tuesday. There were no makeup dates set by The Daily Citizen’s deadline for Dalton’s game at Creekview or Gordon Central at Coahulla Creek. Northwest Whitfield will make up its game at LaFayette on Aug. 31 at 5:55 p.m. Southeast Whitfield will host Ridgeland on Aug. 24 at 5:55 p.m. and North Murray will play at Sonoraville Aug. 26 at 5:55 p.m.
