High School Roundup: 2 homers power Lady Colts’ win

SOFTBALL

Coahulla Creek 7, North Murray 3: Two weeks ago, the Lady Colts and Lady Mountaineers went scoreless into extra innings before Coahulla Creek scratched out one run to get the win. On Thursday at home the Lady Colts didn’t have the same offensive woes. MiKayla Teems and Charis Knight each homered in the Region 6-3A win.

Teems hit a three-run shot in the fifth inning to extend the lead. Knight hit a solo shot in the third to get her team on the scoreboard after North Murray jumped out to a 2-0 lead.

Peyton Warnix had a two-run double to give Coahulla Creek (9-6, 5-5) its first lead in the third inning and finished with three RBIs on the day.

Maddi Locke went the distance in the circle to get the win. She allowed three runs on five hits while striking out five.

For North Murray (9-9, 4-7), Alivia Rymer, Kaylee Higgins and Talli Burgess each drove in runs.

Creekview 8, Dalton 0: The Lady Catamounts (6-8, 4-6 Region 6-6A) managed just three hits in the road loss.

Keen Johnson doubled while Elly Souther and JJ Trowell each singled.

Christian Heritage split a double header, winning 7-3 at Mt. Zion before losing on the road to Bowdon 3-0.

In the first game, Sophomore Elle McDonald broke open the scoring with a three-run home run in the fourth inning. She finished 1 for 3. Junior Macy Smith and senior Sierra Dixon each recorded two hits, with Dixon scoring two runs.

Smith pitched a complete game, giving up eight hits and two earned runs with five strikeouts.

In the second game, freshman Tatiana Chiesa pitched a complete game, giving up seven hits and one earned run. Junior Adain Coulter and Smith each went 1 for 3 with Smith hitting a double off the fence.

The Lady Lions are now 6-8 overall and 0-7 in Region 6-A.

VOLLEYBALL

• Southeast Whitfield won a pair of games on Thursday against local foes — 25-19, 25-15 against Christian Heritage and 25-13, 25-23 against Murray County — moving up to 13-13 on the season.

Junior Savana Punchard recorded 26 total assists. Sophomore Giselle Gomez and junior McKenna Lentych each recorded nine digs against Murray County with Lentych adding five more against Christian Heritage.

Against the Lady Raiders, Christian Heritage got three assists and three kills from Katy Stafford. Ava LaBoy had 12 digs and a pair of aces while Gracie Hill had two blocks, two kills and two aces.

The Lady Lions downed Murray County in a nail-biter 25-27, 27-25, 15-10. Caitlin Brock served seven aces while handing out 19 assists. Stafford put down 11 kills, LaBoy picked up 17 digs and Makenna Richards had four kills, four aces and two blocks.

Stats for Murray County were not reported by the Daily Citizen-News’ deadline.

• Dalton split two matches at Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe on Thursday, beating the hosts 27-25, 26-24 but falling to Ridgeland 25-20, 20-25, 15-7.

In the win over LFO, Chloe Swaney had four kills, Kiersten Cohran had 11 assists and Salma Hijar, filling in at libero (defensive specialist) due to an injury, had three digs to go with two aces.

Against Ridgeland, Swaney and Diemond Simpson each had five kills. Cohran had seven assists to go with a pair of aces.

The Lady Cats are 11-18.

• Coahulla Creek dropped two matches on Thursday at Gordon Lee, losing to the hosts 25-23, 25-23 and Ringgold 25-21, 25-8.

Against Gordon Lee, Meredith Barber had four kills and two aces. Brooklyn Jacobs had eight assists and two digs. Rachel Walker had three aces and two kills. Lilli Ownby had three kills and a pair of digs. Kenzey Fossett had three kills, two digs and two aces.

Against Ringgold, Maggie Linder had two kills, two assists and three digs. Walker had two aces and two digs. Jacobs had four assists and Kelsey Bates had three kills.

• Northwest improved its record to 23-3 with a 25-4, 25-13 win over Gordon Central and a 25-6, 25-7 win over Dade County.

Senior MaLane Kyer paced the offense with 50 assists total in four sets. Senior Holly Heath had nine kills and four aces against Gordon Central and another 10 kills against Dade County. Junior Kaley Long added 24 kills total. Junior Rachel Thurman led the Lady Bruins with six aces against Gordon Central.

CROSS COUNTRY

• Murray County raced at New Echota in Calhoun against Calhoun, Sonoraville and Sprayberry.

The Indians had a 1-2 finish in the boys race as Jesse Martinez won in 17 minutes 37 seconds. Brian Martinez came in second in 18:19.

Also scoring for Murray County were Isaac Soto (14th, 20:54), Austin Gallman (15th, 20:59) and Melvin Ramirez (22nd, 22:45).

In the girls race, Ana Trejo finished second overall for the Lady Indians crossing the line in 24:07. Also scoring were Brittany Lopez (7th, 25:23), Linet Ramirez (17th, 25:47), Andrea Dickson (19th, 28:58) and Kimberly Cervantes (21st, 29:29).

JV FOOTBALL

Murray County 46, Southeast Whitfield 12: For the Raiders, Brett Buckner scored on a 50-yard interception return. Adam Sowder added a 2-yard touchdown run. Fernando Guijon also intercepted a pass.
