Area middle school roundup: Lady Pioneers still perfect

North Whitfield Middle School’s softball team remained undefeated through seven games with Thursday’s 8-1 win at Ashworth.

Lily Synder was the winning pitcher, allowing two hits and three walks while striking out nine, and the Lady Pioneers put together a nine-hit attack, keyed by two hits each from Tessa Hawkins, Tatum Poe and Liv Whaley.

Gladden 6, New Hope 5: Kacie Ausmus picked up the complete-game victory Thursday at home as the Lady Warriors (2-3) held off a late rally by New Hope.

Jordan Swanson had two hits and three RBIs, while Bridgett Cloer’s sixth-inning sacrifice fly brought home Allison Weaver — who stole two bases — for the decisive run. Attie Ridley added a key hit to keep the sixth inning going for Gladden.

• In other North Georgia Middle School Athletic League games on Thursday, Westside (5-0) won 1-0 against Sonoraville (3-1) and Valley Point (2-3) led 13-0 against Eastbrook (0-5) when the game was suspended because of lightning. That game will be completed Oct. 10 at Valley Point.

Cross country

• Dalton’s varsity boys had four top-20 placers to claim a runner-up finish among 13 teams at the Covered Bridge Invitational on Saturday in Bartow County.

Daniel Castillo (fourth), Miguel Guzman (13th), Manuel Prieto (16th) and Austin Burt (19th) earned medals as top-25 placers, as did Grace Anderson (12th) in the varsity girls race and Christian Cordova (15th) in the junior varsity boys race.

Dalton’s varsity girls and JV girls both took sixth among 12 teams, while the JV boys were seventh among 14 teams.

Football

Christian Heritage 20, Normal Park 0: Preston Poag Jr. threw touchdown passes to Zach Gentry and Luke Moseley, while Austin Hackney had seven tackles and returned an interception for the Lions’ other touchdown in Thursday’s home win as Christian Heritage remained undefeated through three games.

Gentry added a two-point conversion, while Jack Ridley rushed for 91 yards and had five tackles. On defense, Jaret Staten had seven tackles, Adrian Cruz and Navy Gazaway each had six tackles — Cruz also recovered a fumble — and Moseley and Syd Reese each had five tackles.

• In NGMSAL eighth-grade games on Thursday, Ashworth (2-1) won 34-20 against Valley Point (1-2), Sonoraville (1-1) won 20-6 against Bagley (1-2), North Whitfield (1-1) won 6-0 against Gladden (0-3) and New Hope (3-0) won 20-14 against Westside (1-1).

In NGMSAL seventh-grade games on Thursday, Valley Point (3-0) won 40-12 against Ashworth (1-2), Bagley (3-0) won 12-8 against Sonoraville (1-1), North Whitfield (1-1) won 24-8 against Gladden (0-3) and Westside (1-1) won 12-6 against New Hope (0-3).
