Prep roundup: Raiders roll to another soccer win

Southeast Whitfield High School’s boys soccer team scored nine more times than Ridgeland shot the ball on Tuesday.

The Raiders got back to winning after a 2-0 loss last Friday against rival Dalton and won 9-0 in Rossville against the Panthers, who didn’t manage a single shot on goal.

Victor Garcia and Artemio Lopez each scored twice for the Raiders (5-1, 4-1 Sub-region 7B-4A), while Axl Arredondo, David Gonzalez, Ramiro Guerrero, Christopher Guijon, and Jonathan Sanchez each scored once. Assists came from Arredondo, Garcia, Gonzalez, Guijon, Isael Gutierrez, Adrian Mungia, Sanchez and Rony Sandate.

While Ridgeland’s offense was non-existant, Southeast’s took 54 shots in the game.

Southeast girls 2, Ridgeland 0: Andrea Lopez scored both goals in the second half with an assist from Tania Lopez in a Sub-region 7B-4A road win for the Lady Raiders (2-4, 1-4).

Morris Innovative boys 2, Dade County 2 (4-3): Eduardo Padilla moved into goal when the game went to penalty kicks and made a pair of saves to give the Tigers the Region 7-2A win at Harmon Field.

Mynor Bautista, Elmer Hernandez, Sergio Mendiola and David Solis all converted their kicks for the victory. Bautista scored his first goal of the year to tie the game 1-all at the end of the first half, while Russell Burse notched his first goal of the season on a corner kick in the second half.

Tigers coach Ernie Dempsey said Luis Perez keyed the defensive effort for Morris Innovative (5-4, 5-3).

Murray County boys 2, Pepperell 1: The Indians (6-0, 6-0 Region 7-2A) benefited from a Pepperell own goal in the second half as they won in Chatsworth. Fernando Arias scored off of an assist by Jose Ruiz for Murray County’s other goal.

Murray County girls 5, Pepperell 0: Morgan Devitt and Sandra Ramirez each scored twice, while Vivian Gamboa added the other goal for the Lady Indians (3-2, 3-2 Region 7-2A).

Ramirez’s goal in the first half put Murray County up 1-0 at halftime. Paxton Dolly made five saves at goalkeeper for the Lady Indians.

Ringgold boys 3, Coahulla Creek 2: The host Colts outshot the Tigers 28-10, but Ringgold converted a pair of penalty kicks and scored the decisive goal with five minutes remaining to hand Coahulla Creek its first loss in Region 5-3A play.

Jo-An Barcenas and Pedro Garcia each scored for Coahulla Creek (5-1-1, 4-1), which trailed 2-1 at halftime, while Manny Morales contributed an assist.

Ringgold girls 3, Coahulla Creek 2: Hannah Grant scored late in the first half and early in the second for the Lady Colts, but the Tigers scored the game-winner with less than 15 minutes remaining to take the win.

Regina Pacheco had the lone assist for Coahulla Creek (2-6, 1-4 Region 5-3A).

Christian Heritage girls 0, Trion 0: Christian Heritage goalie Sarah Massengale had 22 saves, as both teams had the same amount of shots on goal but neither could score.

The game ended in a tie even though Christian Heritage (0-4-1) and Trion are both members of Area 6-A, according to the Georgia High School Association’s website (ghsa.net).

Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe boys 2, North Murray 1 (OT): Fielding a team without four of his starters, North Murray coach Matt Chambers said his team was never in sync. It showed as the Mountaineers suffered their first loss of the season in a key Region 5-3A game.

North Murray (4-1, 4-1) outshot LFO 16-5, but Nieto Rodriguez’s score off of a Victor Iturbero assist was the only goal for the Mountaineers. Chambers said he expected to have his roster back to full strength for Thursday’s game at Coahulla Creek.

LFO girls 3, North Murray 0: Amber Bandy had six saves in the loss for the Lady Mountaineers (1-4, 1-4).

• Results from Morris Innovative’s girls game and Christian Heritage’s boys game were not reported by The Daily Citizen’s deadline.

Regina Pacheco had the lone assist for Coahulla Creek (2-6, 1-4 Region 5-3A).

Baseball

Dalton 10, Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe 0: Tyler Britton went 2-for-3 and drove in a pair of runs as the Catamounts rolled to the non-region win in Fort Oglethorpe.

Dalton (5-3) was boosted by a six-run third inning and also scored twice in the second and seventh. Nik Malchesky finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Maddox Houghton and Charlie Martin each went 2-for-4.

Jackson Bell earned the win on the mound, allowing two hits and a walk. Hunter Nelson struck out the side in a 1-2-3 inning in relief.

North Murray 9, LaFayette 2: North Murray pitcher Aaron Granger gave up just four hits in a complete-game victory and also led the Mountaineers at the plate.

Granger, who has signed to play for Carson-Newman University next season, was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI in the non-region victory at home against the Ramblers. North Murray (4-6) rapped out 11 hits, while Granger struck out five and both of the runs he allowed were unearned as he improved to 2-1 this season.

Offensively, Blake Davis was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs, Brady Harper was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Brody Frazier was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.

“We are swinging the bats and scoring, and when we get good defense, we win games,” North Murray coach David Redmond said. “We cut down on those errors tonight and that helped us out a lot. It was basic baseball.  

Chattooga 12, Murray County 2: Damon Roberts pitched five innings of no-hit ball, but his defense failed him in the Region 7-2A opener for the host Indians (0-3, 0-1).

n Christian Heritage JV 11, Excel 4: Joseph Swartz was 3-for-4 with a double and a triple, while Brandon Poag was 3-for-3 for the Lions (3-3).

Chase Herndon and Avry Thomason each had a pair of hits, while Thomason also got the win on the mound, allowing one hit in four innings of work.

Golf

• Peachtree Ridge and Roswell tied for first with scores of 318 after the opening round of the North Georgia Invitational at Barnsley Gardens.

The two-round tournament will conclude next Tuesday with the second round played at The Farm Golf Club in Rocky Face.

Dalton opened with a 327, and scoring rounds for the Cats came from Landon Hicks (81) and Allen Behr, David Kirk and Addison Lambert, who all shot 82. Northwest Whitfield (358) had scoring rounds from Chad Flanders (87), Ethan Hayes (90), Chandler Lomax (90) and Tyler Clayton (91). Christian Heritage (453) got scores from Kyle Stanley (82), Blake Carver (98), Tyler Tipton (132) and Hutch Swafford (141).

Tennis

Christian Heritage girls 3, North Cobb Christian 2: The Lady Lions (2-3, 1-1 Region 6-A) got singles wins from No. 1 Tegan McEntire, 6-3, 6-4, and No. 3 Sarah Pippin, 6-0, 6-1, plus a doubles victory from No. 2 Courtney Pirkle and Sydney White, 3-6, 6-0, (10-8) to triumph on the road.

Christian Heritage boys 3, North Cobb Christian 2: A doubles sweep from No. 1 Brian Pierce and Samuel Pippin, 6-7, 6-4 (10-8), and No. 2 Austin Lowe and Cal Paige, 6-4, 4-6 (12-10), plus a singles win from No. 3 Devin Sanders, 6-0, 6-0, lifted the Lions (3-2, 2-0 Region 6-A) on the road.

Cartersville girls 3, Coahulla Creek 2: The Lady Colts (8-2, 6-2 Region 5-3A) fell in Varnell as they lost to Cartersville for the second time this season.

Both of Coahulla Creek’s wins came in singles as No. 1 Erin Orem won 6-2, 6-1 and No. 2 Kathryn Barker won 6-2, 6-1.

Coahulla Creek boys 3, Cartersville 2: Also at home, a three-set singles victory and a doubles sweep helped the Colts remain undefeated through 10 matches, including eight in Region 5-3A play.

No. 2 Alex Jarjoura won 2-6, 6-1, 6-1, while No. 1 Donovan Newby and Austin Turner won 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, and No. 2 Andy Dixon and Austin Lansing won 6-2, 6-0.

Dalton girls 5, Southeast Whitfield 0: The Lady Catamounts remained undefeated in Sub-region 7B-4A play with a sweep of their county rivals. Singles winners for Dalton (5-2, 3-0) were No. 1 Chandler Renz, 7-5, 6-2, No. 2 Anna Grace Wilson, 6-0, 6-0, and No. 3 Sydney Tankersley, 6-0, 6-2. Doubles winners were No. 1 Olivia Tidwell and Alice Adams, 6-0, 6-0, and No. 2 Kate Adams and Callie Walker, 6-0, 6-0.

Dalton boys 5, Southeast 0: The Cats (5-2, 3-0 Sub-region 7B-4A) got singles wins from No. 1 Jacob Johnson, 6-0, 6-0, No. 2 Shazman Ali, 6-0, 6-0, and No. 3 Nathan Bryant, 6-3, 6-0. Doubles winners were No. 1 Nicholas Nelson and Taylor Mathis, 6-1, 6-0, and No. 2 Bennett Wills and Riley Gunn, 6-0, 6-0.

Northwest girls 4, Trion 1: The Lady Bruins got their first win of the season in the non-region contest. Singles winners for Northwest (1-1) were No. 1 Gracie Cansler, 6-3, 6-4, and No. 2 Sarah Richards 6-2, 6-1. Doubles wins came from No. 1 Allie Wagner and Halley Henderson, 6-3, 6-2, and No. 2 Megan Richards and Mary Kate Jones, 6-1, 6-2.

Northwest boys 3, Trion 2: The Bruins (2-0) got singles wins from No. 1 Jacob Fredrickson 6-2, 7-5, No. 2 Tristen Smith, 6-4, 6-1, and No. 3 Troy Poe, 6-3, 6-1.

Murray County girls 4, Model 1: The Lady Indians (4-0) got singles wins from No. 1 Greta Lazzarotto, 6-0, 6-1, No. 2 Gabbie Bordelon, 6-2, 6-2, and No. 3 Allison Jones, 6-4, 6-1. The No. 1 doubles team of Chloe Brown and Kailey Webb won 6-4, 6-0.

Model boys 5, Murray County 0: The Indians fell to 1-3 overall with the loss.

Dalton JV girls 5, Northwest 0: The Lady Cats got singles wins from No. 1 Bianca Salaices, 8-0 in pro-set play, No. 2 Emma Bakker, 8-0, and No. 3 Ally Rowland, 8-1, plus doubles wins from No. 1 Caroline Mathis and Mary Turner-Renz, 8-0, and No. 2 Madeline Hughes and Anna Nimmons, 8-2.

Dalton JV boys 5, Northwest 0: The Cats got singles wins from No. 1 Wyatt Cushman, 8-3, No. 2 Jake Myers, 8-1, and No. 3 Raz Rhoden, 8-0, plus doubles wins from No. 1 Alex Reisz and Ethan Ware, 8-3, and No. 2 Hunter Jones and Jordan Long, 8-4.

Track and field

• River Ridge’s boys and girls won a five-team meet at Southeast.

Southeast’s girls were second overall with 92.5 points, while Northwest was third at 89.5. River Ridge won with 156 points.

Southeast’s girls were led by Wendy Perez, who won in the discus with a throw of 107 feet, 3 inches. Other winners for the Lady Raiders were Isabel Salinas (1,600-meter run, 5 minutes, 34 seconds) and Sarah Sullivan (800, 2:37).

Northwest’s McKinley Hopkins was a three-event winner for the Lady Bruins. Hopkins won in the triple jump (33-3), 100 hurdles (15.63) and the 300 hurdles (49.85), while Analeigh Hopkins won the pole vault (8-0) for Northwest.

River Ridge’s boys scored 126 points with Southeast (95) third and Northwest (87) fourth. Winners for the Raiders were Luis Perez (1600, 4:49; 800, 2:11), Corey Barnes (400, 52.24), Will Swantic (200, 23.78) and the 4×400 relay team of Swantic, Perez, Barnes and Dylan Johnson in a time of 3:38. For Northwest, Raul Franco won both the discus (107-0) and the shot put (43-11 3/4).

• Coahulla Creek’s boys finished first and the girls were second in a four-team meet at Gordon Lee.

The Colts were led by a trio of two-time winners. Josh Foxx (high jump, 6-6; long jump, 20-1), Christian Michaylo (110 hurdles, 18.67; 300 hurdles, 48.00) and Timothy Hooper (1600, 5:03; 3200, 11:00) were joined by Tyler Ferguson (triple jump, 38-5 1/2), Josue Dominguez (200, 23.88), Conner Myer (800, 2:23) and the 4×400 relay team (Hooper, Austin Tibbs, Myer and Michael Cantrell, 4:06).

For the Lady Colts, Evelyn Botello won in the 1,600 (6:39) and the 3,200 (14:52). Rachel Cherry (triple jump, 26-8) and Ationza Smith (long jump, 16-6) also won, but Smith, one of the top female athletes in the area, left the meet with an injury after the long jump.
