Two local golfers compete in the U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship qualifier

Two local golfers were among 57 competitors in the U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship qualifier at Cartersville Country Club on Monday. North Murray High School rising sophomore Savannah Satterfield shot an 8-over 80 to finish 30th while Dalton rising senior Carson Roberts shot a 16-over 88 to finish 52nd.
The top seven finishers received spots in the U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship in Tulsa, Okla., July 20, while two alternates were selected as well. Entries were open to female amateur golfers who will not have reached their 18th birthday on or before July 20 and who have a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 18.4.

Gracyn Burgess from Lexington, S.C., Tiffany Kang from Suwanee, Sophie Guo from Bluffton, S.C., and Clare Amelia Legaspi from the Philippines all tied for first with a one-under par 71. The course played to 6,239 yards on Monday.
Satterfield teed off from hole one at 9:30 a.m. and got off to a good start with a par and a birdie on the first two holes. She double-bogeyed hole number three, however, and went on to finish with a two-over par 38 on the front nine and a six-over 42 on the back nine. For the round, she had two birdies, eight pars, six bogeys and two double bogeys.
Roberts started on the back nine at 9:40 a.m. and didn’t fare well on that half of the course either. She double-bogeyed three holes and shot a nine-over par 45. Roberts fared better on the front nine with no double bogeys and shot a 7-over 43. She shot five pars, 10 bogeys and three double bogeys.
Both golfers were selected to The Daily Citizen’s Girls’ Spring All-Area team, which was released on Sunday, and are expected to be two of the best returning golfers in the area next spring.
