High School Roundup: Murray County advances to state playoffs

VOLLEYBALL
• In the opening round match of the Area 6-3A tournament, Murray County High School beat North Murray on the road in three sets, 22-25, 25-22, 25-22 to advance to the state playoffs.

On the night, North Murray was led by Korbin Tipton with seven kills and three aces. Raven Stone added six kills, six blocks and two aces.
Also for North Murray, Haylee Sutton handed out 18 assists, Cady Wheat had two aces and two kills, Julie Petty had four assists and three aces, and Chloe Black had a kill and a block.
Stats for Murray County were not reported to the Daily Citizen-News.
• Southeast Whitfield fell at Heritage 25-7, 25-13 in a first round match in the Region 6-4A tournament.
The Lady Raiders were led by McKenna Lentych with five kills and four digs, Michelle Hernandez with nine digs and Savana Punchard with four assists.
Southeast next plays Gilmer at 9 a.m. on Saturday in a loser’s bracket match as the remainder of the tournament will be held at Ridgeland High School.

CROSS COUNTRY
• Northwest Whitfield and Southeast Whitfield were joined by Gilmer in a Region 6-4A preview race at Edwards Park.
The Southeast boys came in first, beating out Gilmer 31-32, and Northwest’s girls took first with a total of 28.
For Southeast’s boys, Alex Carroll and Diego Guzman led the effort, finishing second and third respectively. Also for the Raiders, Cameron Bell finished seventh, Luis Garcia eighth and Fernando Rodriguez 11th.
Carlos Martinez led the Northwest boys, finishing fourth. Gage Lyon finished 10th, Alex Pacheco 21st, Edgar Ramirez 22nd and Connor Brown 29th.
in the girls race, Northwest had three top-5 finishes as Lindsey Guess took second, Reagan Guess was third and Kate Roberts was fifth. Also, Claire Duffy finished seventh and Jolene Martinez was 11th.
For Southeast, Ally Brown was ninth, Chloe Sirmans was 10th, Lupita Martinez finished 12th, Lizette Gomez was 16th and Diana Mora was 17th,
FRESHMAN FOOTBALL
• Northwest 20, LaFayette 16: The Bruins got a touchdown on the final play as Andy Menendez ran into the end zone to give Northwest the win. Preston Nealy and Chase Gentry also had rushing touchdowns for Northwest (4-2). Nealy threw a two-point conversion to Damien Serrit.
