High School Roundup: Northwest 3rd at Battle of the Border

WRESTLING

• At Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe’s Battle of the Border duals tournament, Northwest Whitfield took third place in the 10-team field.

In pool play, the Bruins beat LaFayette 44-27, East Hamilton 57-19 and East Paulding 54-26. Their lone loss came to host LFO. After tying at 42, LFO got the win based on the seventh tiebreaker.

Northwest was supposed to wrestle Gordon Lee for third, but that match was called off when Gordon Lee withdrew after one of its wrestlers had a family emergency.

For Northwest, Griffin Hughes went 3-0 with two pins while Jamarey Hull and Victor Pineada each went 4-0 with one pin.

Southeast Whitfield finished fifth at the tournament. Josue Cuesta, Alex Ward and Riso Webb all went 4-1 for the Raiders.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

• McMinn County (Tenn.) 72, Murray County 25: The day started rough for the Lady Indians and never improved. Murray committed 13 turnovers in the first quarter and was trailing 15-2 at the first stop.

The lead swelled to a 30-point margin by halftime.

Makamie Garland led the Lady Indians with eight points while Morgan Cowart had five. Kasey Beavers pulled down six rebounds

BOYS BASKETBALL

• North Murray 61, Asbury (Ala.) 40: The Mountaineers won the nightcap at the school’s Mistletoe Madness on Thursday. They broke open the game with a 21-7 second quarter.

Trevor Cox led North Murray (4-9) with 16 points. Waylyn James added 15 and Landon Burrell chipped in nine.
