Lady Bruins roll to track victory

Morgan Williams won two events and Northwest Whitfield’s Lady Bruins captured a four-way track meet against Dalton, Murray County and Gordon Central on Thursday in Calhoun.

The Lady Bruins had 92 points while Dalton finished second with 55.5, Murray County third with 50 and Gordon Central fourth with 49.5.

Morgan Williams won the 400 meters (59.41) and the 800 (2:29) for Northwest.

Taylor Staten took the pole vault (9-0), Bianca Cantrell captured the high jump (4-10), Kelsey Kirk won the 300 hurdles (51.3) and Ieisha White won the 100 hurdles (16.28).

The Lady Bruins’ 1,600 relay team (Kirk, Williams, Taylor Horseman and Paige Thompson) won in a time of 4:25.

Murray County’s Megan Witherow won the 3,200 meters in 13:26 and McKinsi Lents won the 1,600 with a time of 6:03.

— Gordon Central boys 83, Dalton 75, Northwest 72, Murray 17: Leighton Steadman claimed the 3,200 in 10:36 and the 1,600 in 4:54 for the Bruins.

Cameron Griffin won the 300 hurdles with a time of 41.7 and Dean Haynes took the triple jump with a leap of 40 feet, 5 inches.



Varsity tennis

— Darlington boys 4, Dalton 1: The Catamounts’ No. 2 doubles team of Rob Griffin and Andy Partain won 6-4, 3-6, 10-5 in tiebreaker. Dalton is 8-4.

n Darlington girls 4, Dalton 1: Audrey Puryear and Emily Broadrick won 7-6, 3-6 and 10-4 in the tiebreaker.

The Lady Cats are 9-3.

— Southeast girls 5, Gordon Central 0: The Lady Raiders got singles victories from Jade King (7-6, 6-4), Maaika Joyce (6-2, 6-4) and Allura Rogers (6-3, 6-0), plus doubles wins from Beth Weaver and Kaylin Hayes (8-0) and Ana Jones and Lindsey King (8-3).

n Southeast boys 5, Gordon Central 0: The Raiders got singles wins from Ryan Brewster (6-1, 6-2), Tyson Welch (6-0, 6-1) and Tyler Mimbs (6-0, 6-0). Gordon Central forfeited doubles competition.



Varsity soccer

— Dalton girls 10, Gordon Central 0: The Lady Cats (6-3, 6-0) scored six goals in the second half of their rout against the visiting Lady Warriors.

Amalia Zamora doubled her season scoring output, notching five goals to take over as Dalton’s leading scorer this year, while Cristina Acosta and Rachel Czyz each added two.

Alina Escutia had the team’s other goal, as well as two assists. Zamora and Acosta each had an assist.

Dalton, now on the doorstep of winning a Region 7-4A title with only undefeated Rome remaining on the league schedule, outshot Gordon Central 34-7.

Senior goalkeeper Laura Brumbelow had seven saves before giving way to Lorena Leon with about 20 minutes remaining.

Leon did not have any saves, but made some defensive plays to help preserve the shutout, according to Lady Cats coach Tony Carlson.

— Dalton boys 15, Gordon Central 0: Irvin Espinal scored four goals, Carlos Nunez added three and Edibaldo Barrera and D.J. Frazier both finished with two for the Cats (10-3, 6-0).

“Fifteen goals doesn’t happen very often,” Dalton coach Matt Cheaves said. “That’s the limit in high school.”

Luis Rivas, Heriberto Uribe, Ricky Rodriguez and Angel Arrellano all had one.

Ramon Pena registered the shutout in goal.

— Rome boys 2, Northwest 1: The Wolves scored with about 12 minutes left in the game to break up the 1-1 deadlock.

Miguel Tapia scored the Bruins’ goal with an assist by Eric Nunez.

Rome outshot the Bruins (8-7, 3-3) by 24-9. Northwest goalie Oscar Solorzano had 11 saves.

— Rome girls 4, Northwest 0: After a scoreless first half, the Lady Wolves dominated the second with four goals.

The Lady Bruins fell to 5-7 overall and 2-4 in the region.



MS baseball

— Bagley 13, Valley Point 0: Justin Shaw and Colton Roberts combined on a two-hitter and Taylor Patterson had two of Bagley’s nine hits and scored three runs.

Shaw collected a single and triple while Tyler Timms had a double and scored twice for the Braves (7-2).

Shaw started and pitched four innings, allowing just one hit and striking out five. Roberts pitched the fifth — and final — inning and gave up one hit.

— Westside 8, New Hope 3: Keith Teasley went 3-for-3 with a home run and drove in five runs for the Rockets (9-2). Dillon Jones was the winning pitcher.

Nick Stavrow went 3-for-3 for the Kodiaks.

— North Whitfield 10, Eastbrook 7: Jake Douglas belted a two-run double and Ethan Parker added a double for the Pioneers (7-4).

Ashton Storey had two hits for the Mustangs (1-9) while Robby Headrick added a triple.

— Dalton 13, Gladden 2: Alex Blackwell had two hits, including a double, and drove in four runs for the Cougars (9-0) in a five-inning game.

Blake Raber had two hits and scored twice, Chris White added two hits and Alex Roberts had a hit and scored three runs.

Will Kiker started and went four innings, striking out six and allowing three hits, to pick up the win. He’s 3-0.

Storm Evans tripled and scored a run for the Warriors (5-3).

— Grace Academy 7, CHS 5: Rollins Jolly, Tommy Malerbi and Josh Barnes all went 2-for-3 for the Lions (5-2-1). Barnes and Malerbi both had two RBIs.

Malerbi was the winning pitcher, striking out six and giving up four hits in four innings. Michael McKinney finished up, striking out four and giving up four hits.



MS golf

— Valley Point 314, New Hope 338: In a match played at “The Pasture,” the Green Waves’ Will Smith shot a 48 to capture medalist honors.

Katie Burke followed with a 49 while Ryan Collins had a 51, Megan Collins 54, Drew Smith 55 and Aaron Durham 57.

For New Hope, Wesley York and Dylan Waldrop both shot 55s. Silas Ledford and Jonathan Mullins posted 56s, Tyler Grant 57 and Aaron Godfrey 59.
