High School Roundup: Raiders get win over Whitefield

BOYS SOCCER

Southeast Whitfield 1, Whitfield Academy 0: With six players out due to sickness and injury, Southeast (7-4-2) filled up with junior varsity players to squeak out a 1-0 win.

Said Celis scored the lone goal for the Raiders in the second half. Keeper Emanol Ponce had six saves.

• Dalton High School scored a win at the Lady Rambler Invitational on Saturday with a team score of 247. The Lady Catamounts were the top of 15 teams at the event held at LaFayette Golf Course.

Kaitlyn Skiffen lead with a 75 and was selected to the all-tournament team along with teammate Destiny Hill, who shot an 80. Skylar Fromm carded a 92 and Connor Johnson shot a 93.

BOYS GOLF

• Two local teams competed at the Nob North Invitational in Varnell. Christian Heritage School finished fourth with a score of 324 and Coahulla Creek High School finished tied for seventh with a 348. Both teams trailed Walton (313) and Cartersville (318) high schools, which finished first and second out of 12 teams.

For the Lions, Tucker Jordan shot a 77, Hardin Chambless a 78, Mason Cady an 84 and Jack Stafford an 85. For the Colts, Carter Staten shot an 82, Wright Nelson an 84, Spencer Hammontree a 90 and John Hammontree a 92.

TRACK AND FIELD

• Southeast Whitfield High School competed at the Gilmer Invitational where the boys team finished fourth and the girls finished sixth.

Getting wins on the boys side were Mike Zilbert (400 meters, 53.57 seconds) and the 400-meter relay team (3:43.64), which was made up of Alex Carroll, Fernando Guijon, Brian Ramirez and Zilbert.

Earning seconds were Yaphet Salgado (high jump, 5-6) and Carroll (800, 2:10.45). In third was Guijon (triple jump, 37-9) and Valentine Leon (shot put, 36-6 1/2) with Leon also finishing fourth in the discus (97-1).

For the girls, Jurnee Harris took the top spot in the 300-meter hurdles (40.51) with teammate Ally Brown finishing third (45.27). Heavan Cooper (28-4 1/2) and Stephanie Sullivan (26-11) finished second and third respectively in the triple jump and Haley Holland (1:08.12) finished third in the 400-meter.

The girls 400-meter relay team also finished second (4:46.47).

JV BASEBALL

• Northwest Whitfield (9-1) won both games of a doubleheader with a win over North Murray and a 5-0 win over Murray County 2-0.

In the first game, Chipper Kierce pitched five innings, giving up just one hit with five strikeouts. Noah Newman and Asa Cleghorn had RBIs. In the second, Chase Gentry pitched five innings, giving up two hits with two strikeouts. Newman, Eli Nance, Ethan Ensley and Brett Talley had RBIs.

• Christian Heritage split a double header, losing 3-2 to Murray County and then beating Southeast Whitfield 9-8.

In the first game, Murray County won on a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh. Reece Epperson and Bryce Farmer had RBIs for the Lions. In the second game, Christian Heritage overcame a 6-3 deficit to win in four innings. Nash Bingham, Nathan Davis, Epperson, William Green, Luke Owen and Chad Zhang had RBIs.
