High school baseball roundup: Nuckolls triples twice as Northwest bests LaFayette

Northwest Whitfield 14, LaFayette 1

Northwest Whitfield (8-2) shut down LaFayette (5-4) 14-1 Monday night.

The Bruins piled up five runs in the first and third innings and scored four in the second. The Bruins put together 14 unanswered runs after LaFayette took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.

Gavin Nuckolls had two triples and a pair of RBIs, and Hank Scruggs drove in five runs while going 2-for-4 with a double. Cameron Collins doubled and had three RBIs. Eli Speights drove in one run.

Sam Crossen pitched four innings in the five inning game, allowing just three hits and striking out seven. Trent Hixson pitched a hitless inning and struck out one. The Bruins play at Dalton Thursday at 5 p.m.

Dalton 8, Gordon Lee 4

Dalton (4-4) doubled up Gordon Lee (4-5) 8-4 Monday night.

After Gordon Lee took a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the third, Dalton scored three in the fourth to grab the advantage, then extended it with three more in the sixth.

Jose Orrelanes went 3-for-4 with three RBIs for Dalton. Ethan Long, Conrad Coleman and Asher Renfroe each brought in a run. Orrelanes, Josh Mitchell and Scottie Miller combined from the mound for Dalton, Mitchell pitching four innings and striking out five. Orrelanes pitched two hitless and scoreless innings.

Dalton hosts Northwest Whitfield Thursday at 5 p.m.

Heritage 6, Coahulla Creek 3

Coahulla Creek (4-3) fell 6-3 to Heritage (4-2) on Monday.

After Creek scored all three of its runs in the top of the first inning, Heritage responded to tie the game by the end of the second. The score stayed deadlocked at 3-3 until the Generals brought home three in the bottom of the sixth.

An RBI double by Creek’s Fernando Hernandez go the Colts on the board by scoring Connor Chastain. Hernandez scored after a dropped fly ball off the bat of Isaiah Hernandez, then Koby Womac singled to bring home Colton Simpkins. Two of the five total hits by Creek came in the first inning, and the Colts wouldn’t score again.

Tay Brogdon pitched five innings for Creek, allowing four hits and striking out six.

The two teams play again tonight at 5:30.
