Pending a final vote of approval next month, current Dalton Public Schools Superintendent Tim Scott is set to become the next executive director of the Georgia High School Association.

Scott, who has been the superintendent in the Dalton school system since 2018, was announced Monday as the sole finalist for the executive director position, as chosen by the board of trustees of the GHSA.

“As I embark on this new journey, I am filled with both excitement and a tinge of sadness,” Scott said in an announcement released by Dalton Public Schools. “These past six years in the Dalton school district have been nothing short of extraordinary. The dedication and passion of our staff, the unwavering support of parents and the collaborative spirit with our community partners and local industry have truly made Dalton a beacon of educational excellence.”

Once Scott’s hiring is ratified by the GHSA’s executive committee, which meets April 15 in Macon, Scott will be set to take over for current executive director Robin Hines, who is retiring after manning the position since 2017, on July 1. The board of trustees interviewed candidates and voted to recommend Scott as the lone finalist for the position.

“While I eagerly anticipate the challenges ahead, I will forever cherish the memories and relationships forged during my time here,” Scott said.

Scott is set to become the seventh full-time executive director of the GHSA, a voluntary organization composed of more than 460 public and private high schools in the state. Among the duties of the GHSA is to organize state athletics competition. Hines, the outgoing executive director, was the first to helm the position that was not promoted from within the GHSA. Scott will be the second.

“The executive director is the association’s chief executive officer who oversees staff functioning, interprets the GHSA constitution and by-laws, and represents the association with educational, political, and athletic administration leaders on both state and national levels,” according to a job description posted by the GHSA.

Hines announced his intentions to retire in November.

“We appreciate his tireless leadership and dedication to Dalton Public Schools and congratulate him on his new role as executive director of the GHSA,” Matt Evans, DPS Board of Education chair, said in the release. “Dalton Public Schools looks forward to finishing this school year strong and celebrating graduation with our seniors and their families. In the meantime, the Board will immediately work to develop a plan to identify and name our next superintendent. We will provide regular updates to our staff, stakeholders, and our community.”

Scott joined Dalton Public Schools as an assistant superintendent for district operations in 2015, then became superintendent in 2018. Prior to his time at Dalton, he served stints as principal at Douglas County High School. Dublin High School and Northside High School in Warner Robins. Scott also has an athletics background, serving as a wrestling coach and assistant football coach at Northside prior to becoming principal.

“We are excited about Dr. Tim Scott being named sole finalist for the Executive Director position,” said GHSA President Jim Finch in a release. “Dr. Scott brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the association. It was clear during the search and interview process, Dr. Scott was able to articulate a plan and vision to move the GHSA forward. We look forward to his leadership and are confident he can continue to provide a positive and enriching experience for our student athletes.”
