All-Area Girls Spring Sports Teams

TENNIS

Kathryn Barker, Coahulla Creek: After starring for the Lady Colts her freshman year, Barker stepped away from the team to focus on tournament play.

She returned to the team for her senior year and had a huge impact. Barker shined all year as the No. 1 singles player, compiling a 12-1 record for the Lady Colts.

She has signed to continue her tennis career at Berry College

Meredith Page, Murray County: The No. 1 player for the Lady Indians, Page put together a great sophomore year that was key in helping her team into the state playoffs.

The sophomore, going up against the opponent’s top player each match, racked up 11 wins on the season.

Sydney McEntire and Marlee Ellis, Christian Heritage: One of, if not the, top doubles team in the area. McEntire and Ellis were labeled team MVPs and called “the foundation of the team” by coach Elizabeth Hardaway for their playing this past season.

McEntire and Ellis were in their third year teaming together and complimented each other well on the court.

The duo were consistent winners for the Lady Lions almost always assuring the team a point in each match.

GOLF

Makenzie Mitchell, Christian Heritage: The junior was a consistent player all season for the Lady Lions but played her best golf at the end of the year.

Mitchell played her best round of the season at the area tournament hitting the state qualifying score.

She went on to finish tied for 26 in the Class A-Private School state championship.

Tori Owens, Murray County: Owens is only two years into her high school career and is already putting together one that could go down as one of the best in area history.

Despite the GHSA’s move to combine two regions into one area this season, Owens claimed her second straight area/region title.

She backed that up by finishing as runner-up in the Class 3A state tournament for the second straight year.

Katelyn Skiffen, Dalton: Coming off a state title a year ago, Skiffen took over as the No. 1 golfer for the Lady Cats and led the team to a fourth place finish at state.

Individually, the junior tied for 12th.

She finished the year with a scoring average of 79 and won medalist honors at the Lady Cat Invitational, the LaFayette Lady Rambler Invitational, the Heritage Lady General Invitational and the Area 4-6A tournament.

• Savanah Satterfield, North Murray: For the third time in her three years as a Lady Mountaineer, Satterfield closed the year with an all-state recognition. Satterfield fired rounds of 83 and 79 to finish tied fourth in the state at the Class 3A state tournament, leading her team to a third-place finish.

Satterfield never finished lower than fourth in any tournament during the season. She won the North Murray Invitational at Indian Trace and finished fifth at the area tournament.

TRACK AND FIELD

Grace Anderson, sophomore, Dalton: Anderson has already set the bar high for what she can accomplish in her career.

Only a sophomore, she finished ninth at state in class 6A in the pole vault. She tied for fifth at sectionals clearing 10-feet and was fourth in region.

Presley Craig, senior, Dalton: The area’s top hurdler, Craig closed her career as a Lady Catamount with her first trip to the state championships where she finished 14th in the 300 hurdles.

She also was region champion and seventh at sectionals in the 300 hurdles. She also finished third in region in the 100 hurdles.

Annalise Enloe, junior, Northwest Whitfield: Enloe was a constant point getter for the Lady Bruins all season including the Region 6-4A championship meet where she was a frequent visitor to the podium.

She claimed the region title in the triple jump with a distance of 33-1/4 and was second in the long jump at 14-11 3/4. She also was on the fourth-place finishing 4×400 relay team.

At sectionals, Enloe jumped 33-10 1/2 in the triple jump to finish ninth.

Ciarra Hatton, senior, Murray County: Hatton closed her time as a Lady Indian with a record-setting campaign. She set the school record in the long jump with a jump of 16-10, and also ran on the 4×100 relay team that set the school record with a time of 53.1 seconds.

Hatton was also a sprinter for Murray County competing in the 100 and 200 meter dashes.

Hatton was also a second team All-Area selection in basketball and a honorable mention in volleyball.

Sarah Sullivan, senior, Southeast Whitfield: Sullivan was perhaps the best middle-distance runner in the area this season.

At the Region 6-4A meet, Sullivan finished second in the 800 (2:34.32) and fourth in the 1600 (5:53.68).

Her top times this season were 2:32 in the 800 and 5:52 in the 1600.

• Rachel Walker, Coahulla Creek: Walker’s fifth-place finish at state in the high jump (clearing 5-feet) was the highest of any area girl in 2017.

The junior cleared 5-2 to finish second in Region 6-3A and the same height to get fifth in her sectional.

Walker also finished fifth in region in the triple jump and ninth in the long jump.

Rachel Ward, Coahulla Creek: Ward, the top female distance runner in the area, was a two-time state qualifier during her junior year. She finished ninth at state in the 3200 and 12th in the 1600.

She finished sixth in both races at sectionals and was the region runner-up in both events as well.

Ward also finished sixth in both events early in the season at the Dalton Rotary Invitational against a field full of higher classification schools.
