Dalton High School’s wrestling team poses after winning the Conasauga Cup on Tuesday.

After a year away, the turtle is making its way back to the trophy cases of Dalton High School.

Tuesday saw the Dalton wrestling team earn the coveted Conasauga Cup — and its turtle-themed trophy — by finishing on top of a field made up of the high school wrestling programs in Whitfield and Murray counties.

The event, held at North Whitfield Middle School on Tuesday, is named for the river that forms the border between the two counties.

The Catamounts seized back the turtle trophy, which goes to winning side for safe-keeping each year. Dalton won the event in 2021, but Southeast stole the trophy with a win last year.

Prior to Dalton’s win in 2021, Northwest Whitfield had held control of the turtle trophy for the previous three seasons.
