No one qualifies on first day for Cohutta election; two seats on council are up this year

Christian Heritage 21, Bowdon 0

The Christian Heritage School Lions (5-2, 2-2 in Region 6-A) bounced back with a win after two straight losses, taking down Bowdon on the road, 21-0, Friday night.

“It was a good night. I’m so proud of the kids,” Lions coach Jay Poag said. “It’s always good to get the shutout, too.”

Christian Heritage quarterback Matthew Neff returned this week from injury and threw to Ethan Smith to score early, 7-0 with the extra point. Smith then broke through and blocked a punt to set up a rushing score for Gage Leonard one play later. The Lions led at halftime, 14-0.

Neff found Evan Lester for the Lions’ final score of the night.

“The defense was dominant, and by the second half we just let them do what they do,” Poag said. “It was very physical for us the last four games, and we played well with most of our kids back. We did what we were supposed to do.”

Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe 41, Coahulla Creek 18

Coahulla Creek dropped a region road game to Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe Friday night, one filled with simply too many mistakes, coach Caleb Bagley said.

Bagley said though the Colts’ offense was at times successful, they missed three opportunities in the red zone.

“Right before half we got down to about the 2-yard line and we got stuffed,” he said. “We drove about 80 yards and came up empty.”

As his team is still improving, Bagley said Coahulla Creek (1-6, 1-3 in Region 6-3A) could use some more strength.

“We are still another year away from the weight room stuff really paying off, but it’s obviously much better than last year,” he said. “We went down swinging and are ready for another week.”

Coahulla Creek’s Michael King had all three of the Colts’ touchdowns. He had one rushing touchdown, one receiving touchdown from Cade Bates and another score on a 70-yard fumble return after he blocked a field goal. Titus Underwood had more than 100 yards rushing for the Colts.

Coahulla Creek hosts Calhoun next Friday.

Pickens 55, Northwest Whitfield 13

Coach Josh Robinson was not pleased with the way Northwest Whitfield (4-3, 1-2 in Region 6-4A) played in its loss to Pickens at home.

“It was really, really bad,” he said. “We did everything wrong tonight that you could do wrong. There were a large amount of errors in every way possible.”

While Robinson admits his team’s mistakes, he is not excusing them.

“We did not play well, that’s just the bottom line,” he said. “We have to play better than that. We had terrible field position on offense and defense, but it wouldn’t have mattered anywhere the ball was. We couldn’t make stops and we couldn’t move the ball.”

The Bruins scored on a Mason Blanchard touchdown reception from Ty Fisher and a rushing touchdown from Dominique Sistrunk.

Northwest travels to Gilmer next Friday.

“The only way to fix it is to go back to work on Monday,” Robinson said.

Calhoun 56, Murray County 0

Murray County remains winless after a loss Friday to defending Class 3-A state champion Calhoun on the road.

“I’m not gonna lie, it’s tough for us right now but we have to keep fighting,” Murray County coach Chad Brewer said. “We had some injuries, but some younger guys stepped up and played as best as they could. I was pleased to see that.”

Positively for the Indians, junior Tyler Hayes had an interception and a fumble recovery. Brewer said Adam Corral had several tackles.

“We have some players doing well, and we gave it our best shot,” he said.
